Most of the movie takes place on their honeymoon where they go to a resort in Cabo. The drive down from San Francisco allows Eddie to learn more about his new wife (played by Malin Akerman) and realize that she isn't quite the woman he thought she was. What starts off as little, annoying habits that he tries to get over soon become more elaborate half-truths that he didn't quite realize. For instance, she starts off by saying that she is an Environmental Researcher. Well, Lila's job isn't quite that prestigious, much less the pay.
He tries to work through these issues, that is, until he runs into Miranda (Michelle Monaghan) from Oxford, Mississippi. She and her family are down in Cabo so that her uncle and aunt can renew their vows as they do ever year. At first, Eddie is torn between trying to balance his wife who is now so sun-burned that she won't leave the hotel room (sometimes not even the bathroom) and trying to spend time with Miranda. He even tries to work up the nerve to tell her he is newly married. But in the true romantic comedy fashion, misunderstandings abound and Miranda thinks that he is in Cabo to help get over his recently murdered wife. Of course, eventually things blow up in Eddie's face.
One of the special features on this disc is "The Farrelly Brothers in The French Tradition" which are interviews with the creators of the movie. This featurette talks about their first attempts to make money (from paper jobs to a circular beach towel) to their move into the movies. The Heartbreak Kid also has interviews with Ben and Jerry Stiller (who play's Ben's dad) about working together. In this, you get a nice little insight into Ben's decision to go into comedic acting, even though he didn't originally want to, and the chemistry between the two both on and off the screen.
Ben Stiller plays the same type role he does in other romantic comedies, but as always, it works well. The love triangle formed between Eddie, Lila and Miranda is comedic, and even the supporting characters of Tito (Carlos Mencia) and Martin (Danny McBride) add a lot to the film. The Heartbreak Kid is a great romantic comedy that fans of the genre will enjoy seeing. While the vistas and ocean views of Cabo look great on Blu-ray, I don't know if that's quite enough to warrant the high definition purchase, however.
