Back when I was in high school, a TV show debuted on CBS called Forever Knight. It made a pretty good run with 4 seasons available, but I was still sad to see it go. Needless to say that when I heard there was a new show called Moonlight based on a very similar concept, I was waiting very impatiently for it to come out.

Moonlight tells the story of Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin). But it doesn't really tell you much about his life. See, Mick is a vampire and he has been so for 60 years. So really, it is more the story of his afterlife and how he deals with being a vampire. Mick is very much like Angel from the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in his attitude towards humans. Most vampires around him see humans as food. They just don't concern themselves with human lives because they just don't feel that humans are worth their time.

Mick St. John is different from your average vampire. Instead of avoiding humans, except when necessary or for amusement, Mick works as a private detective trying to help people as much as he can. Being a vampire does have its advantages in the world of an investigator. He can not only smell blood, but can tell you which human it came from if he's ever smelled them before. That definitely makes it easier to find hidden little clues to things. His superhuman strength also greatly aids in winning any fight he might happen to get stuck in.

In the course of an investigation about 20 years ago or so, Mick saved the life of a little girl named Beth Turner (Sophia Myles). Since then, he has kept close tabs on her life. In the course of an investigation, they end up meeting face to face for the first time since she was a little girl. Of course she doesn't remember him, but she still feels a strange connection to him. The sexual tension between them definitely works well. Anyway, these two will become very important to each other's lives very quickly.

Moonlight won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama in 2008, so it's obvious that people enjoyed the series. Honestly, I'm not sure why it wasn't renewed, but it's a shame that it wasn't. The storylines are wonderfully done and the acting is terrific. It is amusing to see Sophia Myles as the human this time, since she made such a great vampire in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. Alex O'Loughlin should be quite familiar with detective work since he was previously on The Shield as a detective. The rest of the cast all are wonderful actors as well.

There are no special features available on the disc, which was somewhat of a letdown. Given that the season was killed so abruptly, I guess I was hoping for at least some deleted scenes or bloopers. Anything that would have added more content to a series that was ended way too early would have made me even happier than just having the complete series on DVD. But I guess I'll have to make do with the series only. It alone is well worth buying. If you're a fan or if you missed Moonlight on its brief television appearance, I highly recommend you go buy Moonlight today. You will enjoy it more every single time you watch it!
