For those parents that haven't been keeping score, Heffalump was the best thing to happen to the Pooh franchise since Tigger got his own movie. "Lumpy," as he is affectionately called, started out as a furtive creature, more legend and lore than anything else. The 100 Acre Wood bunch discovered after a protracted Heffalump search that there was nothing weird or spooky about these creatures. Imagine something like a cross between Eeyore and an elephant, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what Lumpy looks like. His mother figured in the first flick, but he flies solo in this outing from 2005.

Fans of all things Pooh that missed Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie are in for a treat. The season approaches, after all. The time approaches when kids intentionally seek out spooks and scares, and court darkened houses on darker streets in hopes of filling their bags with candy. We find in Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie that the 100 Acre Wood is not immune to this buzz, and that the gang is planning for big festivities. The one small problem comes when someone (we'll let you guess) eats all the candy, leaving little hope for a sweet holiday. Much like the mystery surrounding the Heffalump, Roo and Lumpy learn of the Gobloon, a creature that when surprised can grant any wonderful wish. The two set out to find the Gobloon, but end up having some unexpected excitement that creates some kiddie thrills and chills, but resolves in a way that shows the meaning of dedication and true friendship.

Staples of the form include catchy songs, but the theme is a bit dark for especially young or sensitive kiddies. The film's creators mine the typical Halloween hokum, but it has the predictable effect on young kids. Of course, we never actually see a Gobloon, but the premise of something lurking in the dark woods and ready to turn unsuspecting trick-or-treaters into "jaggedy lanterns" is enough to send your little ones scurrying for your lap. It's fun and entertaining for the 5+ set, or a strong-willed 3-5 perhaps... Kids will enjoy all the special features, including some ideas for Halloween party decorations and interactive games. The animation holds up well, and the focus on Roo and Lumpy makes this a romping, rollicking, fast-paced film. Not that Pooh and the traditional cast were too sleepy, but the pace of Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie does seem an upgrade for a new generation. Even though this has been out for a while, it remains a fun time. Also, for those who purchase the Limited Edition version shown here, you'll get a cute little plushy Pooh wearing a Heffalump outfit. A nice little extra.
