Immediately distraught, Sofia calls off her marriage to firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan - Watchmen, P.S. I Love You), who in turn looks for revenge with the so-called Love Doctor. With the help of his computer-hacking juvenile sidekick, Patrick manages to create a fake marriage with Dr. Emma Lloyd. When Emma and her fiancé apply for a marriage license, they find out that she is unknowingly already married and that she needs to file an annulment before being able to marry Richard (Colin Firth - Then She Found Me, Bridget Jones's Diary). To add more comedy in the mix, Patrick ends up posing as Emma's fiancé and gets caught up in the lie even further when her book publisher is spellbound over the fake Richard, causing the "couple" to spend more time together, and begin to fall for each other.
As the story progresses in The Accidental Husband, Emma gets caught between the advice that she shovels out in sticking with her "perfect" marriable man or falling head over heels for the firefighter that broke down the walls of her life and ignited a new fire that burns inside. Because of the predictability of this (and most romantic comedies), you'll probably already guess the ending by this point in the movie.
The Accidental Husband is a stereotypical "chick flick" from the opening titles to the end credits. Even the music has a similar feel to every movie of the genre ever made. The story is a bit contrived and the plot somewhat predictable, but most (especially women) will enjoy this film without a doubt. Given a chance -- or at least being dragged into it kicking and screaming -- even husbands or boyfriends will likely crack a smile a few times with some of the gags.
I would definitely recommend renting The Accidental Husband for a quiet night in, but the story certainly isn't anything new, so most should probably forego buying this title without previewing it first. Getting past the overused girl-caught-between-two-guys romantic comedy scenario, The Accidental Husband is family-friendly movie good for a few laughs. It would have been nice to see a few more special features as well, being that there is really only one (along with a bunch of previews). However, the making-of featurette does go fairly in-depth with most of the actors that star in the film. The Accidental Husband also features actors Sam Shepard and Isabella Rossellini, and is directed by Griffin Dunne.
