Sykes starts the show off with one of the comedic hot-topics right now, President Obama, but she uses his policy of change as a common thread as she talks about everything from her recent gay marriage and twin babies, to weight gain, bikini waxing and health care.
A good chunk of Sykes' routine in this Washington DC show concerns Obama and how the nation has already changed with his presidency. Most notably is her ability to finally go out and buy a whole watermelon without the worry of setting back her race. This bit on a new, relaxed attitude towards worrying about fitting into stereotypes ends up being a great kicking off point for the whole show as all of us watching the act were laughing out loud from the beginning (instead of other comedians who start slow, but build up the laughter).
Sykes continues on to talk about how reluctant we are to change and the fact that we still aren't on the metric system, but have finally gotten a Latina Supreme Court Justice. One of the show's best series of jokes starts off with her telling her family she is gay, and how ridiculous it is because she didn't have to come out black. From there, she goes on to talk about marrying her French wife, and the changes that came about when they decided to have kids.
Like other HBO specials, Wanda Sykes: I'ma Be Me does not have any special features, so there isn't anything to keep you watching the DVD outside of the 90 minute show, but that doesn't hurt this DVD too much since it is likely to be one that you will want to pull out a few times to show to friends. It's because of that, that I'ma Be Me actually ends up being worth the purchase for more than just stand-up or Wanda Sykes' fans.
