It seems like there are quite a few haunted house movies, so each new one really needs to come up with something a bit different to distinguish itself. Haunting at the Beacon isn't actually about a haunted house as it is really an apartment, but that alone isn't enough to set it apart from other movies of the same genre. However, the plot twists and turns give it a relatively unique plot, in my opinion.

The Shaws have rented a new apartment in the Beacon. Bryn (Teri Polo) and Paul (David Rees Snell) needed to move to try and move on after their son, Danny, died. Losing a child is one of the worst things a couple can endure and these two are determined that they can make life work again after a fresh start. Bryn is even going to try and go back to her photography and Paul has gotten work at a university. Bryn's sister, Christina (Marnette Patterson), already lives in the city and is there to help them move in. On moving day, she meets their neighbor, Ty (Nick Sowell). Christina is a bit of a flirt, but she's a really good sister.

The day after they move in, it should be back to life as normal. Paul heads off to the university and Bryn heads out to take some photos of the city. When Paul gets to the university though, he can't find his office. He runs into Simon (Jonny Cruz) who leads him to it. It turns out that Simon and Paul are sharing an office, so Paul at least has a friend right off. When Bryn gets back to the Beacon and is taking pictures of its interior, she runs into Vanessa Carver (Elaine Hendrix). Vanessa lives in the Beacon as well. She was once an actress and is now a total bitch. She accuses Bryn of taking pictures of her when Bryn is just taking pictures of objects. Really she just wishes she was still famous! When Bryn finally gets past her thanks to Ty, Bryn gets Ty to help her unpack some stuff. Of course, she has already heard about him from her sister. When they're going through her newly taken pictures, it looks like there is a shadow of a child in one of them, which just makes her worry that she's seeing things again. She had to be treated by a shrink after Danny disappeared and has already started having bad dreams again immediately after moving in. About this time, Paul is on his way home from work and runs into Vanessa in the parking garage when she is running away from a creepy man that had found a way into the secure garage. He saves her and thinks that she is a really nice woman.

From the time they've moved in, Bryn has been hearing the couple in the apartment next to them fighting. She finally calls the cops when she hears them hitting their son. The Nash family used to live in that apartment, but they moved a few months ago when their son Ronnie (Austin Lux) died. The apartment has been empty since then and the cops think that she's just insane. It's starting to look like she is losing her mind again to everyone. When Bryn starts to see Ronnie Nash around the building, everyone believes that she is just having another psychotic break and is seeing things, but is that the real explanation?

Bryn goes to visit the Nash family in their new apartment to see if she can find out anything about what happened to Ronnie. She finds their home covered with pairs of scissors on the wall and Mrs. Nash (Bridget Coughlin) dead in the bathtub. Mr. Nash (Kevin Scott Keating) lead Bryn to the bathroom where she found the body, but when she gets home, Ty tells her that Mr. Nash is already dead. At this point, Bryn has no clue what she's going to do to deal with this situation, at least not until she meets Simon at the faculty Halloween party. Simon doesn't think that she's insane and at least gives her information on the ghosts and such. He tries to help her figure out how to free the boy and release his spirit so he can pass on. Bryn is determined that she can pull it off and make a difference for this child's spirit, but can she really make it happen without going off the deep end or ruining her marriage or even her life? Or is she already too far gone?

I really liked the ending. Granted it's not the happiest outcome of all, but there were a few twists that I was wondering if they were going to happen and some that I didn't see coming at all. While the movie was a bit slow at the beginning, once it picks up it never stops going! If you're looking for a haunted house movie that's just a bit different from any you've seen before, check out Haunting at the Beacon today.
