Later on, the voices come to her as the creatures living in the cellar manage to escape their prison below. In fact, they don't want to play at all, but rather they want to add to their numbers and Sally will do. They begin to terrorize her - in the bath, in her dark bedroom at night. She tries to explain what is happening to Kim and her dad, but they don't seem to believe her, at least not at first. They blame it on Sally's acting out since she wants to back to her mother, or perhaps she's a little bit insane. As more and more strange things happen in the house, Kim soon realizes that Sally is telling the truth and that she isn't the only one in danger. These little razor-clawed creatures will stop at nothing to claim the girl. Can Kim and Alex save Sally and escape the house before it is too late?
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark had some chilling and creepy moments, but overall, it just wasn't that scary. The creatures were disturbing and there was a scene at the beginning of the film that explained some of the house's background which was eerie, but aside from that, it didn't really set me on edge. All of the acting was very competent and believable, but again, it was nothing to blow me away. Finally, the ending was just sort of blah. As far as special features go, there is a 3-part documentary on the making of the film, but that's it. No deleted scenes or anything really earth-shattering. Again, just like the film itself, merely okay.
As a horror movie rental, you could do worse, but you could also do much better. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark just doesn't impress.
