Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is the fifth feature length film to come from the Highlander licence, but it is the first one to go animated. I have to say though, do not confuse this film with the Animated Series that was out many years ago. The Search for Vengeance is a much more adult title that contains lots of blood and even nudity, so please, please don't get this confused with that very kid-friendly show from the 90's.

This film follows yet another member of the Clan MacLeod, Colin. Except this time, our hero isn't a born MacLeod. Instead, during one of his many attempts at vengence, he found himself fighting with the MacLeods and through the many battles becomes a surrogate clan member. So what is the origin of this particular immortal? In the second century, Colin was a leader in the Celtic Army against the imposing Romans. In a final battle between the two armies, Colin's love is slain by the leader of the Romans, an immortal named Marcus Octavius.

When Colin attempts to sneak into the Roman camp and exact his vengence, he is slain by the opposing general. But, as fate would have it, Colin is also immortal and he has vowed to spend eternity hunting down Octavius. Early in his journey, Colin comes across the spirit of an anchient Druid, and it is through this mystic that he learns about his immortal nature. This same Druid constantly tells Colin that he should leave his vengence behind him, but for over 2,000 years Colin and Marcus clash blades (and fighter planes and armies) many, many times.

Fast forward to the other half of the movie's plot, which takes place in 2187. The world has turned to crap, a nasty virus has been let loose on the world and global warming has completely trashed everything. Colin once again finds his way to an upcoming confrontation with Marcus and along the way, he meets up with a group of freedom fighters trying to throw off Marcus' oppressive reign.

Much like the live action series, The Search for Vengence takes the two stories and interweaves them to help tell the entire story of Colin's obsession. When it comes down to it, if you are a fan of the Highlander franchise, then you have already gotten over the lack of continuity or consistent timeline, so the fact that there are still immortals running around a hundred years after the first film shouldn't really bother you. Because of that, fans of the license are probably the only ones that will really want to pick up this title. On the other hand, if you aren't all too familar with the mythos, this is a good place to start since it is a completely self-contained story.
