The Odd Life of Timothy Green is a sweet story about a desperate childless couple, Cindy (Jennifer Garner) and Jim Green (Joel Edgerton), and the miracle that happens to them. One night, in an attempt to move on from their futile attempts to have a child, they begin discussing just what their child - this child that they’ll never have - would be like. They write down all of the attributes on little slips of paper, living the moments that will never happen, like scoring a winning goal or happily dancing. After many tears, they bury the slips of paper in a box in the backyard amidst Cindy’s garden, then go to sleep. They are awakened by a sudden rainstorm, despite a drought going on, and a noise in the kitchen, and they are shocked to find a tentative but pleasant little boy in their home, covered in mud. He announces he is their son, Timothy (CJ Adams). Sure enough, they find a hole in the backyard and their notes scattered all around, and although it wasn’t quite what they had imagined, they are thrilled by this odd child that has come into their lives.

The most peculiar thing about Timothy is the fact that he has leaves growing from his ankles and even though the Greens take him to a friend and plant expert, no one can figure out why, nor can they trim the leaves off. So for now, they ask Timothy to keep the leaves a secret, because people may not understand. Cindy and Jim go about trying to be the best parents they can and to do everything that they didn’t have in their own childhoods, however they realize it’s easier said than done. Timothy starts making small changes in the community, sharing his love and kindness with everyone he meets and little by little, he makes a difference. Whether it's teaching James Green Sr. (David Morse) about being a better father or simply sharing a laugh with Cindy’s beloved Uncle Bubb (M. Emmet Walsh) in his last days, Timothy begins to win almost everyone over. He becomes close friends with a quirky but strong girl named Joni (Odeya Rush) and she gives him the strength to be himself, even if it means enduring mockery when he stops what he’s doing to stretch his arms towards the sun every time it comes out. Timothy manages to teach Jim and Cindy what it truly means to be a good parent and that love and happiness can come from the most unlikely of places.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green is a lovely and bittersweet film that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s a great film for all ages as it teaches the appreciation of family and what is most important in life. It comes packaged with a handful of special features including some deleted scenes, a music video, commentary with Director Peter Hedges, plus featurettes on the movie’s concept and the music created for the film. The film has some brilliantly colored and beautiful scenes since the film is based around the outdoors and looks fantastic on Blu-ray. Aside from the main characters, Dianne Weist and Ron Livingston also turn in great performances, along with Rosemarie Dewitt, David Morse and Common. The Odd Life of Timothy Green is a wonderful film for the whole family, and in fact, my family watched it together during the holidays and thoroughly enjoyed it. Do yourself a favor and check out this unusual but sweet movie.
