Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season opens some three months after the events of Season One's finale which had Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) boarding the alien spaceship in an attempt to save his son, Ben (Connor Jessup), from some vague but dangerous future fate. The 2nd Mass is surviving pretty well without Tom under the leadership of Captain Weaver (Will Patton), but Tom has been dearly missed. We soon discover that Tom is back and through an episode of flashbacks, we discover how he came to be reunited with the 2nd Mass and we get a little insight into how the alien race operates. Some members of the 2nd Mass, specifically Pope (Colin Cunningham) are concerned about Tom's sudden reappearance after boarding the ship and want him booted out or, at the very least, locked up until they can be certain he poses no danger. However, during a dangerous attack, Tom proves himself to the group.

Although he tries to keep it a secret, it is revealed that Ben has been communicating with a group of Skitters, much to everyone's shock. But when a chink in the Overlord's armor is discovered in the form of a group of disgruntled Skitters, it just might give the humans the edge they need to take back their planet.

The 2nd Mass finds out about a new government forming in Charleston, SC and the decision is made to trek over hundreds of miles in the hopes of salvation. Once they arrive, however, things aren't quite as they seem. The de facto leader is Arthur Manchester (Terry O'Quinn), Tom's professor mentor turned politician, but he has very different ideas than General Bressler (Matt Brewer) who heads up the new military. Unfortunately for all, the 2nd Mass has ideas of their own, but will they be able to carry on with their plan to defeat the aliens without a tremendous loss of life?

Familiar faces return in Rick (Daniyah Ysrayl) and Karen (Jessy Schram), but their motives are unclear. Before the explosive season finale, lives will be lost, resolves will be tested, and the shocking arrival of a new group of characters will leave us guessing as to whether they are friend or foe.

Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray. This isn't a major movie, despite the powerful punch of the Spielberg name behind the scenes, but the special effects are still pretty darn good, especially for a TV series. I can still feel the deep, resonant sound of an approaching alien mech down into my bones every time one comes on the scene and it always sends a chill down my spine. Special features are fun and include an episode of 2nd Watch, commentary on select episodes, several behind the scenes featurettes that talk about what it takes to bring the show to the TV screen, a featurette on a contest where fans from around the world were brought to the sets to interact with the cast, a sneak peek of Season 3 and an animated trailer created by Dark Horse Comics. I was surprised that there were no deleted scenes, but maybe they are just that good. My favorite feature was the 30 minute episode of 2nd Watch, a talk show following the season finale featuring cast members and hosted by Wil Wheaton.

All in all, if you enjoyed the first season of Falling Skies, there's no reason not to pick up Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season to add to your collection. It's just a great sci-fi series that keeps getting better and better.
