In one of the featurettes, the director describes it as someone taking the days of Linda Hanson's week and tossing them in the air. Where they land is how she will live them out. This is the best way to think about this movie. As each day unfolds, it randomly could be a day that occurred before or after Jim's death. This makes Linda feel as though she is going insane and she sets about to try and prevent Jim's death, if she can. However, actions she takes throughout the movie affect other actions and things begin to change. Her older daughter suffers a strange injury and those around Linda began to doubt her sanity and they have her committed. She finds lithium pills in her bathroom, yet she doesn't remember getting the prescription. She sees a strange woman (Amber Valetta, What Lies Beneath) at her husband's funeral, only to find out she has already spoken with this woman, and that she is somehow involved with Jim. Best friend Annie (Nia Long, Are We There Yet) tries to help Linda hold it together, but strange things just keep happening. If it sounds confusing, it's because it is confusing. While things don't always make sense, nor do they completely resolve themselves, the trip is an interesting one.
Sandra Bullock is a phenomenal actress and she proves herself once again in Premonition, running the gamut from devastated widow, to protective mother, to almost-insane woman struggling to make sense of a situation that makes no sense. By the end of the film, you will literally be tired out from watching Linda's struggle with this madness, but it is definitely worth the ride.
Among the extras are the earlier mentioned featurettes, some deleted scenes, but most importantly, the gag reel. This had to have been an emotionally charged and depressing film to make, but the cast did much to lighten the mood behind the scenes. The absolute best is a gag reel where a cast member plays a joke on Sandra Bullock at the crash site. Her reaction and behavior is absolutely priceless. I won't reveal any more because it is so funny, you must watch it yourself, but only after you watch the movie, as it has a bit of a spoiler.
This may not be one to buy, but it is definitely worth a rent. Then again, it warrants a second watch just to get everything straight, so maybe a purchase isn't a bad idea after all. I really enjoyed Premonition and I recommend it.
