MAR: 3 The Second War Begins continues Jack and Ginta's training in Ed's alternate dimension while the Chess Pieces quickly take over the world of MAR. While Ed watches over the two pairs of trainers (Ginta is with Princess Snow, while Dorothy and Jack are in the second training ground), the trainers will work for six months even though only three days will pass in MAR.

Babbo's true power starts to become realized when some of the magical stones that Ed put on the Arm are activated during the training. When this happens, Ginta is allowed to imagine new powers for Babbo, and while these powers seem really simplistic at first, when Ginta puts them to use, they are very effective. Unfortunately for Ed, the Chess have found him while waiting for the training to end, and his three days of staying awake has really taken a toll on his stamina. For those that don't remember, Ed can't fall asleep, else he will turn into his dog form again, something that wouldn't really be that helpful in a fight.

Thankfully for Ed, Ginta and Jack come out of their training just in time to save their mentor. After showing their new skills, and defeating Ian (the Bishop that the group fought at Snow's castle), the group form "Team MAR," seven heroes who will protect Princess Snow and retake MAR as foretold by an Oracle that talked to Snow before she ran away to safety. Of course, the group isn't exactly sure if they have the right number of people. Does Ed count as one or two people, what about Babbo? In that same episode, their travels take them to a man named Naashi who is the leader of a band of thieves, who also joins Team MAR, whom they claim is the sixth member of their group.

This volume also gives hints as to exactly who Boss, the previous person summoned from our world to defeat the Chess, actually was. Let's just say, there seem to be a lot of similarities between Ginta and Boss. Needless to say, these are eventful episodes that do a good job of developing existing characters and offering the quirky action sequences this show is known for.
