Resident Evil: Extinction is the next step in the Resident Evil movie franchise. Five years have passed since the events that led to the destruction of Raccoon City. Alice (Milla Jovovich) is now on the run and the world has become a post-apocalyptic combination of Dawn of the Dead and Mad Max. Few survivors remain and most of them have banded together to form a convoy under the direction of Claire Redfield (Ali Larter, Heroes). The spend their days driving around looking for food, gas and weapons to prolong their lives. A couple of familiar faces are in this group. Carlos (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps) are back, along with newcomers Betty (Ashanti), who acts as a medic, and K-Mart (Spencer Locke, Monster House), a young teen who has a serious crush on Carlos.

In the meantime, the evil Dr. Isaacs has been busy working on a leaner and meaner version of Alice, while his satellites attempt to locate her whereabouts. He has taken her DNA and recreated hundreds of Alice clones which he then uses in dastardly experiments, testing them to see if they can survive Umbrella's horror trials. They never do and their bodies pile up outside. Dr. Isaacs works for Albert Wesker, who is in charge of what remains of the Umbrella Corporation, whose facilities survive deep underground, despite the destruction of the world around them.

Eventually, Alice connects with Claire Redfield's group, saving them from a huge flock of killer birds by using her newly developed psionic powers. The group agrees to try to make it to Alaska, since they recently found a diary indicating that there is no infection there. To make it, they need to get to Las Vegas and tap the gas reserves there. Unfortunately, Dr. Isaacs locates Alice and decides to perform the ultimate test on "Project Alice" by releasing a new group of zombies on her and the convoy. This new breed seems to have some understanding and can perform menial tasks like using cameras and cell phones, but they are also far more wicked and fast. Needless to say, the convoy's numbers dwindle after this attack.

Since Dr. Isaacs has a helicopter in his securely fenced bunker, they decide to steal it and get to Alaska that way. In the ruckus, Dr. Isaccs is bitten by an infected zombie and injects himself with massive amounts of the T-virus to combat it, becoming a monster himself - the Tyrant, for those of you familiar with the Resident Evil games. A showdown with Alice ensues.

The end of the movie leads us to believe that there will be a sequel complete with Alice and her clone "friends" although the next movie seems to take a completely different direction, based on the sneak peek found in the Special Features section. Resident Evil: Degeneration is a CGI movie that seems to feature the characters from the game. I am all for this, although I really like the live action movies as well. Personally, I hope they continue to do both.

Also included in the Special Features are deleted scenes, commentary and a bunch of making-of featurettes that discuss how the creatures changed in this iteration, how the stunts were performed, how Vegas was recreated, etc. I always love these featurettes because I enjoy seeing the real Milla. She is such a fun actress because she really gets into her roles, doing most of her own stunts, etc. and I love that about her.

Needless to say, if you are a Resident Evil fan, this movie belongs in your collection. It's the natural evolution in the series, with excellent acting and top notch action scenes. I hope to see more of the same in the future.
