Naruto Vol. 22: The Last of the Clan! continues Sasuke's fight with his older brother Itachi, while Naruto faces off against another assailant, Kisame.

Before Kisame can finish Naruto off, Jiraiya steps in after being led astray and saves the orange-haired ninja. Meanwhile, Sasuke's fight has taken a major turn for the worse since Itachi has paralyzed the younger Uchiha with the same technique that sent Kakashi into a coma. Jiraiya performs a special summoning jutsu that turns the walls into the stomach of a fire-breathing toad. The sannin claims that the two rogue ninja are trapped and can never escape through the lining, but this proves to be false as Itachi sends black flames out and tears through the stomach lining. With Itachi and Kisame once again out of the picture, Might Gai finally catches up to the fight, only to arrive just in time to take Sasuke back to their village so that he can be treated alongside Kakashi.

It's a good thing Naruto and Jiraiya are hunting down who they hope will become the next Hokage, because Tsunade is a legendary medical ninja and possible the only person who can bring Kakashi and Sasuke around. Unfortunately, because her skill is so renowned, Naruto and Jiraiya aren't the only ones looking for her. Since the loss of his arms against The Third Hokage, Orochimaru has decided that Tsunade is the only person that can heal him as well.

Once again free of pursuit, Naruto realizes that he really needs to learn the new technique that Jiraiya promised if he is going to survive another encounter with that pair. So after quite a bit of pestering, Jiraiya shows Naruto a move that creates a powerful ball of swirling chakra. But since the technique is so hard to learn, much less master, Naruto has to start small. In order to focus his chakra and learn to control it in such a small and concentrated location, the Toad Sage fills a ball with water and gives it to Naruto. The first stage of his training will only be passed when Naruto can use chakra to spin the water inside the ball so hard, it explodes. And once he is done with the thin-skinned water ball, he will have to do the same with much more force in order to burst a rubber ball of water.

This volume is good, because we start to see the first glimpses of Naruto's eventual ultimate attack, the Rasengan. But seeing as only a few people have been able to master this technique (the last one being The Fourth Hokage), it will obviously take a lot of work before Naruto will be able to wield its awesome power.
