I didn't expect to like My Mom's New Boyfriend as much as I did, but I really enjoyed it. Picture Meg Ryan at about 210 pounds with disheveled hair and looking like a bum. This is how we are first introduced to Marty (Meg Ryan), as she sees son Henry (Colin Hanks) off to join the FBI. She is a complete mess, blubbering in the airport after he leaves, sitting on the floor and drinking a Coke. When a passing man tosses a coin into her drink, assuming she is homeless, she decides to clean up her act. Cut to 3 years later when Henry is coming home to work in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana and will be bunking with mom for a bit. Much to his surprise, when he enters the house, he finds that a pool has been added and he sees a hot blonde in a bikini sunning herself. He is in total shock and disbelief when the hot blonde turns out to be his mom, who completely changed her life after the coin incident. She lost weight, got her life together and studied religions around the world and has decided to make each day count.

After Henry is joined by his fiancee, Emily (Selma Blair), the three go out to have a day of fun. While Marty is embarrassing Henry, she gets conked in the head by a wayward remote-controlled helicopter piloted by the dashing Tommy (Antonio Banderas), international business consultant. But really, he is a globe-hopping art thief who is trying to steal a Bernini statue that is on exhibit in their town. Marty and Tommy are smitten with each other and embark on a relationship and when Tommy takes the four for dinner to a secret dining establishment that has drug and weapons deals going on in the back room, Henry starts to think Tommy isn't what he seems. He soon discovers his identity and is tasked by his superiors with the job of spying on Tommy to see when the heist is going down, which includes listening in on his mom's romantic nocturnal activities, much to his chagrin. Seeing him squirm is really funny stuff.

The movie plays out in a really funny way and it spins a great yarn. Everyone does a fine job in their roles and I really only had one complaint about the movie at all. Meg Ryan. What on earth has the girl done to herself? Sure, she still has a great figure and all, but her face makes me uncomfortable. It looks like she has had cheek implants and her lips are puffed and she is stepping into Joan Rivers/Priscilla Presley territory for sure. I found it disconcerting and because of that, I had a hard time buying the fact that everyone around her thought she was so beautiful and hot. But anyway, it is still a really funny movie and one worth watching. Special features are lean and only include deleted scenes and a making-of featurette, but My Mom's New Boyfriend is a great popcorn flick and would make a terrific rental.
