Madagascar is a star-studded animation about a group of animals from the New York Zoo who somehow find themselves stranded on the island of Madagascar. Alex (Ben Stiller) is the king of the jungle and the star of the New York Zoo. He's loving life, spending his days under the adoring eyes of the kids and parents that visit the zoo, and his nights being primped and pampered by zoo employees, dining on fine steaks. He can't imagine a better life. His best friend, Marty (Chris Rock), feels differently, though. He dreams of running wild and free in a jungle paradise, just like the mural painted on his wall. When a wacky group of penguins from the zoo decide to make their great escape but pop up in Marty's area instead, Marty takes his chance to break free. When Alex and his other friends, Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) discover Marty's absence, they do their best to find him, leading to panic in New York City.

The zoo makes the difficult decision to send the animals to a wildlife preserve in Africa, but through the meddling of the penguins and some twists of fate, Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman find themselves as castaways on an island, which they'll soon discover is Madagascar. At first they think they've arrived at the San Diego Zoo, but they soon discover that things aren't going to be as easy as they first thought. They first encounter a crazy kingdom of lemurs, being led by King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen), who sounds an awful lot like Robin Williams, and his advisor Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer). But when his wild surroundings start to affect Alex and all he sees are steaks in the place of his friends, things get complicated. When King Julien and company decide that Alex must be banished to the dangerous side of the island with the other carnivores and the group of friends is separated, they have to decide what is more important - natural instincts or friendship.

This disc is packed with special features including a number of featurettes on the making-of Madagascar, as well as the cast and the tech behind the film. There's also a Dreamworks Jukebox with songs from all your favorite Dreamworks animated features like Shrek and Over the Hedge, plus animation bloopers which were a lot of fun to see. Probably the most fun special feature has got to be the animated short The Penguins in a Christmas Caper, which is just priceless. Madagascar on Blu-ray is the way to go. If you haven't added this animation to your collection yet, definitely go for the high def version. It looks and sounds spectacular.
