SXSW 2009: Much Better than Thunder from Down Under

Company: SXSW
Product: Lake Mungo/The Horseman

There was a huge showing from our friends Down Under at SXSW 2009. With several selections in the festival this year, two stood out for me as must-sees.

First film up is Lake Mungo, directed by Joel Anderson. The first thing I thought when I was done watching this movie was that it is the best modern day telling of a Blair Witch Project-like movie. Supposedly based on true events, this documentary-like movie will give you the chills and then stick with you for a while. After drowning in a nearby lake, the family of Alice Parmer begins to feel her presence in their home. In a weird turn of events, Alice's secret life is revealed as are all of the clues that lead up to the day of her death.

"After you get done watching this movie, you are going to leave here feeling like you have been punched in the b@!!Z!" This is how the second movie, The Horseman, was introduced to me. The best part of the start of this movie was that I had to stand up in front of the movie theater and participate in a boat race. If you are unfamiliar with the term Boat Race, I can't explain it to you here. Anyway, after I left the movie, I did indeed feel like I had been punched. This is a good, old fashioned revenge movie very much in the vein of The Limey. This was a movie you felt as you watched each fight scene. I think the reason I liked this film, besides the great action, was that the character, Christian (Peter Marshall), was not a deranged psycho. Well, he was deranged, he just wasn't a stereotypical inhuman killing machine.

You may catch Lake Mungo on DVD, but you should seek out The Horseman wherever you can find it. If this does not make it to a wide theatrical release, I see it being a huge home video success. I see it having a huge underground following like Boondock Saints. You need to find these movies wherever you can.
