12 Games to Rock Your Halloween Party

Company: GameVortex.com
Product: Games for your Halloween Party

Halloween is the time for outlandish costumes and great parties, typically costume parties. If you're like my friends and I, parties have come to include videogames - especially party games. However, in the grand scope of things, there aren't a lot of horror videogames... especially not that could be considered "party games." You're looking for a game that can be played by several people at once - and, hopefully, enjoyed to some degree by party-goers who are waiting for their turn or are just watching.

The first thing to consider is if there is an appropriately spooky game that would work well with your group. One possibility is the upcoming Ju-On: The Grudge Haunted House Simulator for the Wii. This one's primarily a one player game, with some limited two player functionality, but if your group is composed of fans of The Grudge (or even those who like making fun of it), this could be interesting to watch as someone plays through it. For that matter, the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games can be fun to watch, and full of jump scares and some really disturbing images. Then again, Halloween doesn't have to be all about horror...

Other popular themes at Halloween are often pop-cultural references, with costumes based on characters from comic books, movies, TV shows, board games, fast food restaurants (a la Burger King)... you name it. Some of these have been featured in games - and some of those games are even multiplayer party games. There are laughs to be had with the King Games for the Xbox, of course, but don't forget games such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which could be awesome at a Superhero - themed costume party.

Another thing to consider is that the above scenario works just as well the other way around. Videogames are pop-culture, so you can chose a game or variety of games that are to be played during the party and have party goers put together costumes to match the theme. For a game that has customizable characters, such as Karaoke Revolution, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk or DJ Hero, you could task your guests with putting together a costume that matches their character's in-game model. (If you are expecting guests that don't have the game, you might also put together a collection of accessories to help guests adjust their look after they arrive.)

Then again, other games have set, recognizable characters, allowing your guests to be able to easily source reference material to make their costumes or - in some cases - even buy them off the rack. Here's an idea... select a game system (or two or three) that will be playing during your party, and have your guests dress up as a character from a game for that system and bring that game with them when they come. This should provide a variety of games to be played, as well as some great costumes. Maybe limit it to "retro" games, and break out your Space Invaders ice cube makers and set out snacks that Pac-Man would eat. Or, if your group is more Nintendo-oriented, go for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and have your guests dress like any of the three thousand playable characters from that.

I would be remiss if I didn't suggest Beatles: Rock Band - a game that not only spans the generation gap and crosses the pop-culture divide between music, movies and videogames, but, need I mention, a game that is utterly forgiving, ultimately approachable and allows up to six people to play at the same time. Plus, your guests could dress up in clothes from the Sixties and you could pick up a few bowl-cut wigs for the performers and voila! ...instant hit party.

If you want to put things on more of an even playing field and earn bonus points at the same time, have a game that just came out, to help maximize player interest. The Halloween party at the GameVorplex this year is going to be a DJ/Baller/Club Kids theme, featuring the upcoming DJ Hero, which - I can tell you from first-hand experience - is out the box and off the chain. (Well, I can tell you with all authority that DJ Hero will be rocking my Halloween... and I'm not sure yet if I will be inviting anybody over.)
