THQ Announces Initiation Station

Company: THQ
Product: Saints Row The Third

One day I'm going to sit down and pen an article on my love of character customization and how, at least in my opinion, it is one of the best things to ever happen to storytelling in videogames. Needless to say, the option is always a major deal for me, especially when it allows for the range of looks available in both Saint's Row games.

Although I tend to rally against the idea of recreating characters and celebrities in games (I question why, when given creative freedom we re-create what's already there), I have to admit to owning a Obama look-a-like character. Maybe it is the reason behind re-creating the familiar, but I got a kick out of seeing my Obama roll through the Row in a purple camouflage SWAT tank. However, getting the Obama look-a-like wasn't easy and required taking notes on numerous customization values, which was an absolute pain.

That pain will go away with Saints Row: The Third. This morning on the official Saints Row blog, developer Volition announced the Initiation Station. The Station takes the game's already deep customization options and adds a social component. With the Initiation Station, players will be able to create their own character in-game then upload it, so other players will be able to download it to their game. Its a small item, but it you have ever spent hours trying to re-create characters from an online database, it is a huge deal.

Access to the Initiation Station is free across all platforms. However, THQ is offering early access (one week before everyone else) to players who also pre-order Red Faction: Armageddon.

We'll have more coverage on Saints Row: The Third next month at E3.
