This Just In... A World Of Your Own

Company: GameVortex.com
Product: Player Created Content

Massively Multiplayer games have given players the ability to portray themselves to others and every aspect of character customization allows player to express a greater degree of individuality. Some MMOs have even allowed players to create "homes" in-game, but these often are personal areas, not publicly used areas, which is sort of strange when you think about it, given that it's in an MMO.

Rift: PvP Dimensions

Rift has a feature called Dimensions, which is an area that you can customize, design and develop into your own areas. These areas can even have little boons for other players, but they are still more for looks than anything, in my experience.

However, Rift has just released PvP Dimension Tools, which allow players to create their own Player vs Player Arenas.

PvP Dimension items are available individually or in small starter packs, but for a limited time, there is also a complete bundle containing Faction Banners, Start Points, Damage and Kill Zones, Scoreboards, Invisible Tiles and Spheres, as well as other items.

RIFT PvP Dimensions are now available!

Everquest Landmark

Everquest Next is under development and, in an interesting move, they are developing two different games at the same time: Everquest Next, an upcoming MMO continuing the series with developer-created content, and Everquest Landmark, which takes the tools the developers are using to create the world in Everquest Next and makes them available for players to go crazy.

The expectation is that the feedback from players using the tools could lead to improvement in the development tools themselves. In addition, players will be able to create their own in-game objects, which they can then sell to other players, using an in-game marketplace. There will even be an option for players to earn real money selling their creations.

Check out the video below; it shows some of the amazing creations that were whipped up by players during the game's Alpha. When you're done with that, check out the link below to apply for the Closed Beta test.

Oculus VR

Meanwhile, of course, there is Oculus VR, which was recently purchased by Facebook to the tune of 2 billion dollars. This provides them with a lot of money for research and allows them to sell units to the public cheaper, to boot.

While Oculus VR isn't making a game that features player created content, their flagship product has the potential to take this all to the next level. The Oculus Rift is designed to create a gaming experience that takes you from playing a game to "being there." Combine these technologies and you will be able to create a place patterned after your fantasies, then "go" to that place.

Yep, things are about to get interesting...
