Over the Hedge Previewed!

Company: Dreamworks Animation
Product: Over the Hedge

Some of our staff members recently had the opportunity to attend a screening of the soon-to-be released Dreamworks CG-animated comedy Over the Hedge - and what a delight it was! The special screening was held in conjunction with the Red Stick Animation Festival which took place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana April 21-23, 2006. Over the Hedge screenwriters and Baton Rouge natives Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche were on hand to answer questions once the film ended.

Over the Hedge tells the tale of an unlikely “family” of woodland creatures who awake from hibernation to discover that most of their once-tranquil woods has become home to an exclusive subdivision. RJ the raccoon, voiced by Bruce Willis (Sixth Sense, Die Hard), joins Verne the turtle (Garry Shandling), Hammy the squirrel (Steve Carell), Ozzie the opossum (William Shatner), his daughter Heather (Avril Lavigne) and many, many more in a star-studded lineup that is guaranteed to bring on the laughs.

In an unfortunate turn of events, RJ becomes indebted to a very angry bear when he destroys the bear’s stockpile of food. To escape his impending doom, RJ must replace the goods or suffer the consequences. He happens upon the group of foragers who have awakened to discover their neighborhood changes and while teaching them the wonders of suburbanism and the delights of junk food, he works to accomplish his goal. Of course, once the animals “invade” the picture-perfect neighborhood, hilarity and chaos insue. Of special note is the performance by Thomas Hayden Church (Ned and Stacy, Wings, Sideways) as Dwayne LaFontaine, the Exterminator. According to screenwriters Kirkpatrick and Poche, Church ad libbed most of his lines and they are laugh-out-loud funny, as it the entire film.

Over the Hedge is based upon the cartoon strip of the same name and is a wonderful family film that not only encourages the value of the importance of family, but also makes the evils of excess in the world of suburbia something we can all laugh at while we drink our Starbuck’s coffee and drive around in our SUV’s. This is one not to miss when it hits theaters on May 19th!
