With E3 Dead, Who Will be Next?

Product: The Austin Game Conference

This past week saw the 4th annual Austin Game Conference come and go. The conference has had a great deal of success with its up close and personal panel discussions and open floor discussions. Actually composed of three specialty conferences, with nine tracks and a main exhibition hall, the conference has a lot to offer game developers. The tracks available this year at The Austin Game Conference concentrated heavily on both the MMO market and the casual game market both in the US and around the world. The conference has expanded to a record 2,400 attendees.

In the three years prior to this conference, I have had the privilege of watching The Austin Game Conference grow from little more than a few organized meetings to a content line that is applicable to professionals in the industry, and it has been a great experience. The use of the expo hall for open recruiting and third party software demos has created an open collaboration among peers. This conference is not for the average guy off of the street who just wants to see new games. It is for industry professionals and those who wish to actually work in the industry. If you are looking to get into the industry, this is for you. If you are an independent developer looking for connections, this is for you. You want to talk with leaders in the game world and check out the newest game creation tools? Then yes, you're home.

With its already established structure, there were many who already had next year on their lips, and even more who speculate that this not-so-little development conference may swell exponentially due to the "death" of E3. There was already an increased tangibility with products and games out on the floor. As we look ahead to the next conference, I hear many of the larger companies already planning for larger, bigger and badder. I see many of the other conferences picking up the slack from E3 and creating a more tangible experience for everyone.
