Blu-Ray Passes Up HD-DVD in Cumulative Sales

Company: SCEA
Product: Blu-ray

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that since the release of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, with more than two million units shipped worldwide, Blu-ray Disc has experienced tremendous growth in consumer adoption.

According to Nielsen VideoScan, the consumer research firm for the VHS and DVD sell-through industry:
  • Blu-ray has surpassed HD-DVD in cumulative sales
  • Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles by more than a two-to-one margin during the first week of January (47.14 HD DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)
  • Blu-ray titles outsold HD-DVD titles closer to three-to-one during the second week of the month (38.36 HD-DVD titles for every 100 Blu-ray titles)

Mind you, that's SELL-THROUGH numbers - the number of units that were sold to consumers, like you and me.

According to SCEA customer survey data, 90 percent of current PS3 users have watched a Blu-ray movie on their PS3, 80 percent stated that they plan to purchase a Blu-ray movie and 72 percent stated that they plan to rent a Blu-ray movie in the near future.

Every PS3 system is equipped with a built-in Blu-ray Disc player giving users the ability to experience seamless animation and action sequences not seen in other gaming devices. Consumers can also use their PS3 as a Blu-ray Disc player to watch their favorite high-def movies in full 1080p resolution.
