Van Helsing: Life is Van Helsing

Based on the upcoming movie of the same name, Van Helsing puts gamers into the boots of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, one of the world's most famous monster hunters. Judging from the spectacular trailer for the film, Van Helsing looks to be one of the darker action movies coming out this year, and so far it looks like the game will follow that same path.

'The Van Helsing game puts a fresh, exciting and contemporary twist on some of the most legendary characters to ever appear in print or film,' said says Luc Vanhal, President and Chief Operating Officer, North America, Vivendi Universal Games. 'Paralleling and expanding on the epic events of the film, the game offers players a cinematic action experience packed with nightmarish creatures, furious combat and daring escapes.'

Sent by the Vatican to a distant European country, Van Helsing must hunt down and destroy evil before it can destroy the world. The plot of the game will intertwine with the events in the upcoming movie, allowing you to play through key scenes from the movie as well as original back-story meant to deepen the Van Helsing mythos. While most of the movie's plot is still shrouded in mystery, some elements are coming together and so far things look good. Van Helsing matches the famed monster hunter from the Bram Stoker novel, Dracula, and pits him against a number of monsters inspired by classic horror properties like Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and, of course, the dark lord of the vampires himself, Dracula. However, this Van Helsing is a little more action oriented than the one Stoker originally conceived. While on his quest to stop evil, Van Helsing will employ a variety of weapons in this 3rd-person adventure game including scimitars, shot guns, a hand-cranked gatling gun and Van Helsing's signature grappling hook.

'The haunting world created by the filmmakers, and the interpretation of these legendary characters as we have never seen them before, offers a fantastic jumping off point to develop an emotional and atmospheric action game experience,' adds vice president, Interactive, Universal Studios Consumer Products Group, Bill Kispert.

Van Helsing is slated for a May release on the PS2 and Xbox to coincide with the movie's release.
