Spyro the Dragon: Season of Ice: Spyro Takes Flight on the GBA

We managed to play a little bit of the upcoming GBA title, Spyro: Season of Ice. While the version at E3 was quite primitive, it still had that Spyro charm, and some recent screenshots we?ve gotten our hands on show that the game is progressing even further in the visuals department.

Like its 3D counterparts, Spyro: Season of Ice details the exploits of a little purple dragon. Spyro roams around large fields, collecting gems and fighting baddies and releasing some fairies from their icy prisons--hence the name of the title. While not many gameplay details are available, the title looks to follow a structure similar to the other Spyro titles. Instead of a real-time 3D world, the GBA Spyro uses an isometric viewpoint that has many of the advantages of 3D, without needing the hardware. It looks quite nice.

The new screenshots reveal a few of the different worlds that Spryo will be adventuring through; the basic hub system still seems to be extant, as one of the pictures shows a ?winter hub.? Indeed, the version at E3 had a number of gates which, while you couldn?t enter the levels, showed the same basic hub structure. Indeed, it seems as if Spyro will have many of his abilities from the previous titles; even on the E3 version, the hovering-and-final-oomph bit was working well. Since the Spyro games are progressive--unlike, say, Metroid, Spyro kept his abilities from Ripto?s Rage in Year of the Dragon--there?s hope that almost all of his abilities will survive intact from the PSX, and perhaps new ones will become available.

Spyro: Season of Ice is expected to be released near the end of this year; we?ll be keeping tabs on it.
