Graphics & Sound:

Absolutely everything about Max Payne's graphics will give you a jaw-dropping experience. It's not just that the textures are perfect, from any range. But they are. It's not even the player models or building structures that make your eyes bug. But they do. What puts Max Payne over the top is the extreme attention to detail, right down to the countless bullets hitting any and all objects in the environment. But even this has been done before. However, I can guarantee you will be drawn into the action with the incredible flames and explosions, as well as the mind-blowing camera tricks that can drive you loony (in a good way!!!).

Of course, eye candy is only one element of any video game. In order to be truly drawn into the action, a good audio track is a must. Max Payne's audio is more than just good, it's superb! Brought to you in Dolby Digital sound, you'll literally be surrounded in the action when connected to a Digital Receiver. You'll hear every bullet whizzing past your head, every explosion in your face, and every bit of shattering glass hitting the ground. And, thankfully, the game's story is made that much better by the outstanding voice actors, especially that of Max Payne himself.

Gameplay:

If you've ever wondered what a third-person shooter should look like, you must see Max Payne. If you've ever wanted to run rampant, shooting your way through everyone you see, you must rent Max Payne. But if you want to experience a near-perfect game in its entirety, you MUST buy Max Payne. As the lead character, Max Payne is a former DEA detective turned fugitive, in pursuit of the killer(s) of his family. To deliver the story, the developers of the game choose to use a 'graphical novel system.' What this means to you and me is that most of the story is told using a comic book style presentation with voice-overs. Any other way of telling the story of Max Payne wouldn't have done the game justice. This graphical novel system gives a fresh new approach to the action shooter genre of games.

It's very hard to describe the quality of Max Payne's gameplay without actually playing the game for yourself. The best I can do is this: Max Payne is a fast-paced, action-packed, thrill-a-minute third-person shoot-em-up. Got it? Between story elements, you'll control Max through different indoor and outdoor environments, where there's always someone waiting around the next bend. Here and there you will come across puzzle elements that need to be solved in order to proceed. There is a perfect mix of puzzles and action. To keep your brain's juices flowing, a few simple brainteasers will break up the bullet-flailing madness. But be warned. There is no shortage of action in Max Payne!

Without giving away any story elements, I can safely say that I have never played another game with as many special effects as this one has. Whether you're running for your life through burning buildings or stuck in a dream-like state, there's always a fresh facelift in gameplay as you blast your way through baddies who want nothing more than to give you a case of instant death. Incredibly, one of the most amazing things about Max Payne is the game's ability to alter its difficulty level as you play.

Difficulty:

Although there are three selectable modes of difficulty (after beating the game first), one of the coolest features in Max Payne is that it's the first action game to monitor your play ability, and adjust the difficulty accordingly. What this means is that you don't have to be the Rambo of action shooters to be able to play Max Payne. It also means that if you already are the master of your own domain, enemy AI will be upped a notch to give you more of a challenge. Overall, Max Payne is a very playable game and can be enjoyed by all (bearing in mind the Mature rating, that is).

Game Mechanics:

There's only one place to begin when talking about the mechanics of Max Payne... 'shootdodging.' Ever seen The Matrix? Shootdodging is essentially a super-slo-mo action shot that allows you to slow down time, giving you the upper hand when gunning down enemies, while at the same time dodging bullets heading your way. The element of shootdodging is not only one of the sweetest features every to cross into the gaming universe, but it's also an essential element in making your way through Max Payne's universe.

I really only have one complaint with the entire game, and it's pretty minute. Controlling Max is done using both analog sticks (which is the best way handle it), but some elements of his movement seem a bit sluggish and un-Max-like. In short, he jumps like a sissy! Weird. That aside, Max Payne is an incredible game and, in my opinion, a must-have for any Xbox (or PC / PS2) owner. Max Payne is a landmark in the gaming industry and I hope we see more quality titles like this in the future.
