A Bug's Life

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics in A Bug's Life are nicely done, although some of the animation is not completely synced properly... meaning, when Flik runs around, he looks more like he's pedaling than running. The textures are beautiful, and that's good, but unfortunately, there are no animated cut scenes, as there are in the PlayStation version. Also, the voices are completely absent in the scene introductions. All spoken text is instead simply written at the bottom of the screen. The game is alright in its own right, but it seems that it would have been a better use of the Bug’s Life license to have given a more cinematic feel.

Gameplay:

You play the part of the lovable hero, Flik. As in the movie, you are the colony's unlikely last chance against the malicious grasshoppers, who are out to take all the seeds. You will have to face 13 different types of enemies, fighting them off by throwing berries (some work better than others), using the Butt-Bounce move, or just running like heck to avoid them. (I prefer the latter.) Some of the interaction you can have with your plant surroundings include swinging from vines (really cool), and pulling up and throwing mushrooms (undoubtedly a skill Flik picked up from Mario).

Difficulty:

The Nintendo version of A Bug's Life is not as difficult as the PlayStation version. Sometimes, that's good, other times, that's bad. There were some parts in the PlayStation version that probably unnecessarily difficult, but the N64 version of A Bug's Life does not seem to be quite as challenging, making it GREAT for beginners.

Game Mechanics:

One unique thing about A Bug's Life is that as you progress, you find more and more uses for seeds... you can jump on them to produce mushrooms that may be used as trampolines, plants with leaves you can stand on, or these little whirly windmill-type plants, which will blow Flik or another seed into the air. You must carefully plan when, where and how to use the seeds to your best advantage, as they can be scooped up and carried around, as well.
