Graphics & Sound:

Graphics are where Rage games excel and Incoming is no exception. Incoming has some of the most breathtaking visuals you'll find in any game, but best of all, the transition from cut scenes to gameplay is seamless. Know why? Because what you'll be seeing is actual in-game graphics. These graphics are so amazing that there is no need for CG cut scenes. Now that's smooth. As for the sound effects, they are more than appropriate for the situations and I am happy to report that Rage/Interplay did not opt to use the phrase 'Incoming' over and over in an irritating manner. The voice-overs are well-executed and the background music is average.

Gameplay:

Oh boy. This game really delivers when it comes to the gameplay department. The plotline is basic fare. Us against them - the aliens, of course. But this doesn't really matter. What does matter is the fact that throughout Incoming, you are in command of various vehicles in one the most fun space shooters around. Basically, it's a shoot-em-up that requires some thinking. During some 60 levels (6 scenarios with 10 mission each), you'll control either a helicopter, a surface craft (tank type thing), an aircraft or a gun turret. You may be defending a base, attacking an enemy fortified area or just on a kill-em-all mission. There's a handy H.U.D. at your disposal to aid you in your missions, as well as scads of cool weapons upgrades as well. Just buckle up and follow that way point marker, as it will always tell you where you need to go.

Also, you can opt to play in either Arcade mode, where you can battle it out in any area for practice or a quick fight, or Campaign mode (more fun), where you wage a full-on war with storyline and all. There is also a 2 Player mode where you and a friend/enemy can fight one another for supremacy of the skies... or land or gunship, as the case may be. It's a split screen mode with 2 choices of game types. Defense Force, where one will defend a base, the other attack, and Body Count - duh. He who kills the most, wins. Fun, but by far, the best is Campaign mode for the single hero, uh, I mean player.

Difficulty:

Hmmm. Some missions are easy, some average and a few are damn near impossible. Overall, the difficulty level is good. You may find yourself repeating certain levels over a few times before defeating them, but it's not so frustrating as to make you launch your controller at the nearest person, yelling 'INCOMING!!'. Ok, well not too often, anyway.

Game Mechanics:

The controls are as follows: You, in one of several vehicles, following a way point marker and killing or destroying everything in your path. The vehicle you command in a particular mission is dictated by the game, and I think it may have been interesting to have made all of the vehicles available and let the player choose which one to use. But anyway, you'll begin each mission with a briefing and then you better look lively, because the bad guys start swarming in and it's kill or be killed. Complete the mission and you progress to the next. Get blown up or allow your base to get trashed, and you fail. It's a good game - lots of fun and highly recommended.
