Graphics & Sound:
Yowsers! The graphics are incredibly smooth in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for the N64. Textures are near perfect and angles are physically realistic. If you have ever played the PlayStation version of THPS, you will be right at home and groovin’ to the beat. The background music is a collection of very intense alternative-style kickin’ tunes from the Dead Kennedys, The Ernies, Goldfinger, Speedealer, Suicidal Tendencies, The Suicide Machines, and Unsane.

Gameplay:
Gameplay in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is outstanding as well. In single-player Career mode, there are nine levels of play, including Competition matches where you will be playing against computer-player scores in hopes of a gold medal. To unlock new levels, you will have to collect videotapes by reaching your goals of each level. Two-player mode offers three styles of split-screen action, including my favorite, HORSE, in which you and your bud go head to head trying to better each other’s score. And with virtually no load time, you can skate to your heart’s content! THPS is an incredible game!!!

Difficulty:
If you have played Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater on the PSX, you will be able to jump right into this game with ease. If not, it will take some practice, although you’ll be doing triple-combos in no time. Difficulty comes in two forms: Tricks... and Landing those tricks. Master them both and you will be unstoppable. Using the N64 controller (vs. the PSX) is a bit tricky because you use the ‘C’ buttons to do your tricks. The cramped space and small buttons of the controller is hard (for me) to get used to. However, after I got settled in, I was performing tricks with more ease than I was with the PSX version, partly in thanks to N64’s joystick. If I were to rate THPS‘s difficulty by age, I would suggest 10-and-up.

Game Mechanics:
If you like high flyin’, stunt performin’, fast movin’ action, then Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is for you! Heck, THPS is for nearly everyone! With three multiplayer modes, and an intense single player Career mode, the replay value is outstanding. Using eight directions on either the pad or the stick of the controller, combined with the three main buttons for performing tricks, you will have plenty of moves to master. For best results, always spin when you hit the air and combine ‘flip tricks’ (C-left) with ‘grab tricks’ (C-right). Doing this will increase your score greatly. So grab your controller, grab your board, and grab some air!!!
