Rally Challenge 2000

Score: 60%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: Southpeak Interactive
Developer: Genki
Media: Cartridge/1
Players: 1 - 4
Genre: Racing

Graphics & Sound:

Poor. Well, I guess the graphics in Rally Challenge 2000 are okay, but not great by any means. By themselves, the cars look good. By itself, the environment looks good. Put together, mediocre at best. I find it amazing how when the cars travel through the mud, they seem to skid on top of it instead of interacting with it.

The sound is pathetic! ‘Easy Right’ and ‘Hard Left’ is about all you will hear, other than the engine and track noises. Not impressive by any means.

Gameplay:

Don’t let the above fool you. Gameplay of Rally Challenge 2000 is pretty good. Not the best, but pretty good. There are many modes of play, including Arcade and Championship Modes. You will have your choice of cars, all with different attributes. Find the one that you like and stick with it, as you will have to learn its precise steering. A cool feature in the game is that if your car takes on too much damage, you will notice the effects. If you feel your car swaying to the side, you’ll have to compensate throughout the rest of the race.

Rally Challenge 2000 also has a 1-4 player mode. As Nintendo 64 has moved through the ranks, 4-player games have stood the test of time. The only thing bad is that the framerate seems to hunker even in single player mode, even though the game doesn’t seem to have all that much action on the screen at any one time.

Difficulty:

Rally Challenge 2000 really isn’t all that hard on any one track. Even in Expert Mode, with a little practice, you will be able to weave your way to victory. Truly the hardest part of the game is getting used to how your car steers. You will have to learn to over-steer your car around hard corners or you will not survive. Unfortunately, the framerate is slow and this takes some of the smoothness out of the cornering, ultimately making this sliding technique harder than it has to be.

Game Mechanics:

Accelerate, brake, and steer... it’s that simple. Make sure that you find a car that suits your style of racing and stick with it. Cornering around hard and winding turns will require you to begin your turn in advance to slide around the muddy corners. Different track conditions will make for different racing techniques. Learn how your car handles in the snow, mud, or asphalt, and you will easily race your way to victory.
