Shadow Watch

Score: 90%
ESRB:
Publisher: Red Storm
Developer: Red Storm
Media: cd/1
Players: 1
Genre: Adventure

Graphics & Sound:

After playing quite a number of the recently released games and noticing that most of them have very similar graphics (although they are great graphics), it was a nice change of pace to play Shadow Watch. The graphic style of the game, it's maps and environments are very modern, almost anime or Aeon Flux. I heard one person describe it as graphic novel or comic book. The characters are very well detailed, so that when they are in a location, they are easily identifiable. The soundtrack includes the usual narrative and sound effects, but the plus is the music track. The music track will change according to what location you are in and helps to convey the 'feel' of your current location.

Gameplay:

Based on Tom Clancy's novel from the Power Play series of the same name, Shadow Watch takes you into the dark world of international crime and high tech stakes. With Clancy's name behind the project, you can be sure that there will be plenty of unexpected twists and turns. You begin by selecting if you would like to play either a single mission, which you will be scored on, or a full campaign. Single missions are a good place to begin with so that you can gain experience that will help you in Campaign mode. In Campaign mode, you have an overall objective to uncover the plots of your enemies. This objective will take you to cities like Honk Kong and Rio. Now, the game will take you on various subplots, and each subplot averages around 25 missions. Your objective will determine what kind of missions your team will be asked to engage in. One of the types of these missions is an assault mission, wherein your main objective is take out all the enemies in your location. Nice and simple. Oh, by the way, you want to try to do this without sounding an alarm. Just a little harder, but you can do it!

There are also defend missions where you will have to defend a given location from attacking enemies and kidnap missions where you must stealthily take on of your enemies hostage, so that you can interrogate him for much needed information for your campaign. A raid mission is very similar, but you have to steal on object instead of stealing an enemy. My favorite type of mission is called a raze. Here, your main objective is to destroy the enemy's location. Yes - blow it to smithereens. Woohoo! Other types of missions include rescue, surveillance, and theft, which are all self-explanatory. On each mission, you can choose which members of your team you will take on that mission. Each player has different skills, so choose wisely because you don't want to send your weapons expert - who enjoys blowing things up - to steal something. They can be a little heavy in the foot.

Difficulty:

Controlling Shadow Watch is the easy part of the game. Learning strategy - sending the right people to do the right job at the right time at the right place without sounding an alarm is the hard part. But if the game was not a challenge, why would you want to buy it?

Game Mechanics:

Shadow Watch is a turn-based strategy game controlled by hot keys on your keyboard. It won't take you long to learn which keys do what. Each character can only do one thing at a time, so be prepared when the enemy takes his turn!
