Duke Nukem

Score: 80%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: GT Interactive
Developer: Torus Games

Players: 1
Genre: Miscellaneous

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics during the cut scenes of Duke Nukem were spectacular. The game graphics weren't that bad either. It's a 2D side scroller, but the graphics look fine. The sound is typical Game Boy sound (I've never cared much for it). I found that everything had enough detail and color to be able to navigate the game with no problem. You could tell your little Duke was a person, the aliens were, well aliens, and you could tell what the items (like guns) were. I was surprised with the lack of pixelation and detail achieved in this game.

Gameplay:

Duke Nukem plays a lot like Mario, but with an attitude. At first, I thought the side scroll jump shoot game would get boring, but I actually liked it. It was a welcome change of pace. You get to run around, shoot aliens, and collect things like guns, ammo, and letters. If you get all the letters to spell Nukem, you get more points or something like that. Your health bar and armor status is at the bottom of the screen, out of the way. I found the levels to be long enough, but not too long. It was a perfect mix of action and maze navigating. Like I said, Mario with an attitude. Everyone likes Mario, right?

Difficulty:

I thought the game had a perfect mix of length and difficulty. It wasn't a walkthrough, but I didn't once chunk the Game Boy across the room in frustration. In the beginning, the aliens are easy to kill (one shoot). Later on, they get tougher, and they begin to shoot back. The ease of play and lack of impossible foes makes this a winner for all ages.

Game Mechanics:

Run left, run right, jump, climb, and shoot. Can it be any easier? I know, sounds boring, right? Not so. It's Duke, man. This game has an old school, new game feel to it. Simple mechanics, battery powered saves, and fluid response makes this game almost addictive. I will never admit to being addicted to any game, but this one could have some potential. The simple D-pad, 2 button design combined with easy to see action area (with the vital info at the bottom) really makes this game fun. Watch out Mario, Duke is on his way.
