Triple Play 2001

Score: 80%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: Handheld Games
Media: Cart/1
Players: 1
Genre: Sports

Graphics & Sound:

Honestly, the graphics aren't half bad. I mean it's no 3D monster, but it does look good for a Game Boy Color game. There isn't too much detail, but the colors are nice and some of the animations are down right impressive. Even the sound is manageable. You can see what you need to see. The ball is easy to find, and the players are easy to tell apart. The only thing I didn't like was the proportions. The players were huge compared to the rest of the environment. Other than that, the graphics were good.

Gameplay:

It should come as no surprise to you that Triple Play 2001 is a baseball game. My main problem with this game is that there is a lack of gameplay options. Basically, there are two modes, Single Game and Home Run Derby. There is no Season or Tourney mode! On the upside, all of the MLB teams and players are here.

The game runs a bit slow. That's okay, because that allows for some reaction time. The game is fun, but a lack of modes makes it get old too fast. The gameplay truly is solid; however, it is baseball. How hard could the gameplay be? Hit, throw, run, catch, that's it. For what it does, it is a good game.

Difficulty:

As with most sports games, the game difficulty is adjustable. By turning on Field Assistance, you can make the game easier. You also have the options of Rookie, Pro, and All-Star difficulties. I found that the game was easy to play. No trickiness to it. The 2-button D-pad combo makes for pretty easy gameplay.

Game Mechanics:

As I said, Triple Play 2001 does run a bit slow; however, the controls are nice and easy. The game goes with the standard baseball controls (if you've ever played a baseball game, you know what I'm talking about). Although the game is lacking in the gameplay mode area, everything else seems to be on target. This is a good looking, good playing little baseball game.
