Graphics & Sound:

In all honesty, the graphics aren't bad. They are very 'kiddish' but not bad. The colors are great, the detail is good, and it runs smooth enough. The sound could have been better, but it wasn't horrible either. Overall, I was impressed with the way the game looked. I mean it's nothing revolutionary, but it's nice. Each character has his unique look, so you can't confuse one with another. There also seems to be a style associated with each character as well. The environmentals are okay, but they could have done better on the 'power-ups.' As a whole, the game looks good, especially for the GameBoy Color.

Gameplay:

There's this big story and mystery behind the game, yawn, but basically you go to this island for some extreme games. While on this island, you can compete in five different events. These events include skyboarding, street luge, in-line skating, surfing, and skateboarding. There are a couple dozen different 'tracks' to compete on. You can also grab these special 'power-ups' along the way to give you an edge over your opponents.

The game plays pretty easily, and it's not really too involved. There is a Practice mode, as well as an Adventure mode. In this mode, as you win events, you learn more about the island. When you're done, you know the secrets of the island and it is no longer a mystery. How nice. I'm gonna have to say that the game was fun. It did get a little old, but it was fun while it lasted. I can't promise years of play, but you will enjoy it for a while.

Difficulty:

I thought the game was easy to play. I also thought the game was easy to beat. The controls were easy, the gameplay was not difficult, and the difficulty level was ... well not. The only real bad thing about this game is the fact that it's too easy. However, considering Xtreme Sports' target audience, I think it will work out fine (it is obvious that the game it targeted for people much younger than I, but I still liked it. What does that say about me?).

Game Mechanics:

There's a saying that I heard all through college: KISS - keep it simple stupid. That is the approach that Xtreme Sports takes on. The mechanics are simple both in logic and implementation: Move with the d-pad, do stuff with the two buttons - nothing fancy, nothing hard. The game is just downright easy to play. It runs well and looks well. Nothing sick about this one.
