Tokyo Xtreme Racer

Score: 80%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: Crave
Developer: Genki
Media: CD/1
Players: 1 - 2
Genre: Racing

Graphics & Sound:

Quite frankly, without a shadow of a doubt, Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the best looking street racing game to date. Sparkling reflections, tail light streaking, flashing of high beams, and a hardcore soundtrack that will certainly send the most melancholy of individuals into road rage, all in an amazing 60 frames per second. You have the ability to upgrade nearly every aspect of your car with the customizable 3D models. However, the lack of tracks, and some noticeable slowdown with multiple cars on screen, does slightly hinder some fun factor away from the game. But once you get into the amazing scenery and fast-paced action, those flaws can become negligible.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is slightly tense at first. Some of the cars feel a little stiff. However, once you make some quick cash and add a few mods to your G ride, things start to smooth out. The physics for TXR are well done with all the trimmings of true racing, such as power-sliding, fishtailing, and gear ratio adjustments. The only thing that I wish would have been added to Tokyo Xtreme Racer would be true damage and collision. But then again, this game was designed to make you outthink the other driver without having to worry about fender benders.

Difficulty:

Tokyo Xtreme Racer touts perhaps the most intelligent A.I. I have ever gone up against. The computer drivers will cut you off, push you around, force you on an exit off of the interstate, jam you behind a non-racing car, and I guarantee you it will show less mercy than one of your school chums. This game is for the true competitor who thinks that computers cannot outsmart man. And if you don’t believe me, then rent or buy this game, race against the four devils and the four divas, then wipe the asphalt out of your orifices.

Game Mechanics:

If you don’t need a large number of tracks, and don’t mind that your poor little car doesn’t show you how bad a driver you really are, then this is the best damned racing game you are gonna play. This game is oozing fun factor. You drive up behind the competitor of your choice, blind him with your high-beams, and challenge the jabronie to take a drive down “Know Your Role Blvd.” If you are looking for a good racer for your Sega Dreamcast, I would truly advise Tokyo Xtreme Racer. However, if you can’t handle driving frustration, don’t buy this game unless you purchase many controllers ‘cuz you’re gonna break one with this game’s great A.I.
