Carmageddon

Graphics & Sound:
Carmageddon features superbly crisp graphics and vibrant colors. The game features more than 32 fairly detailed tracks spread over eight areas. Each stage is vastly different from the last stage, so the game always has something interesting and fresh in each stage. The music found in the game has a techno sound, which fits a game like this perfectly. During races, familiar engine noises, bumping noises, and skidding noises are heard.

Gameplay:
Carmageddon’s gameplay focuses on racing around what is now left of Earth, as most of the world’s population has turned into flesh eating zombies. The remaining unaffected human race now races around in various pre-constructed racetracks, where their cars are used to take care of those nasty zombies. You can choose to complete races in one of three ways: complete all the laps of the race, destroy all the opponent vehicles, or splatter all the zombies on the level. Tracks are designed in a way where you have total freedom to race, chase, and annihilate anywhere on the map. You can also chose from more than 18 unique cars, each with it’s own handing characteristics including grip coefficients, engine capacities, and braking abilities.

Difficulty:
Game difficulty isn’t too extremely difficult. The majority of the earlier levels are fairly easy to complete and help give you a feel for the game and what you will be doing throughout the game. As you progress in each level, you are presented with an increase in difficulty, which is what any good game does. For those who do not have the time to race all of the games’ 32 levels in one sitting, the game offers a password at the end of each level.

Game Mechanics:
Like most Game Boy Color games out there today, controls are very simple and moves are fairly easy to execute. You use the D pad to control the vehicle, A is accelerate, and B acts as the brake and reverse, and A + B results in a jumping move. The game’s controls are very tight and responsive, which makes racing very enjoyable. For those familiar with the PC version, Carmageddon is a bit of a let down as it does not offer all the detailed gore that made the original so darn fun. But its Game Boy translation turned out to be a very decent racing game; one that you should add to your Game Boy Color collection.
