Braveheart

Score: 40%
ESRB: Mature
Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Developer: Red Lemon Studios
Media: CD/1
Players: 1 - 6
Genre: Strategy

Graphics & Sound:

Let’s just say for the sake of not being overly harsh that Braveheart needs a dramatic makeover. Besides the fact that about 80% of the game is played from a 2-dimensional map, the character designs are quite blocky and flat. The backgrounds are bland and repetitive and lack pizzazz. The sound is quite good on the intro, but just falls apart after that. Did I mention the game has a really cool intro???

Gameplay:

Uuuhhh none. Braveheart makes me feel as though I’m playing Battleship. It’s point-and-click development on a map, making trade routes, planning strategic attacks, and going to a 3D perspective during times of battle. This game in and of itself does not feel like a game. It feels as though you are being taught a history lesson while planning real-time battles. Great if you plan on being a military strategist for the U.S. military.

Difficulty:

Try cutting off your arms and legs, being twirled on your head ten times, getting blindfolded, and then given a Rubix cube to solve, and it would still be easier than this one. The overall fact that Braveheart is true -- and I mean true -- simulation makes the game difficult to the point that it is not even fun to play.

Game Mechanics:

Once again, as stated above, Braveheart is almost exclusively played from the perspective of a main map. You click on icons setting up villages, trade routes, using diplomacy, and preparing for war. The 3D battle system is nothing more than point-and-click with referencing back to the map for strategic planning. I hope the guys at Red Lemon and Eidos don’t take this to heart, but this game lacks the most important factor that a game can possibly have: FFFFUUUUUNNNNN!!!

However, if you are of Scottish decent, love military strategy, and really got a kick out of the movie, I’d say that this game is definitely you baby.
