Graphics & Sound:

THE BEST! I cannot say enough about the wonderfully rich environments in Unreal, and Return to Na Pali is as good as the original. Make room Unreal-aholics, because you’ll have to snag this beauty for another dose of lavishly rendered scenes of foreboding alien architecture. I wandered awestruck in the Velora Temple map for many hours, examining the minute details lovingly rendered by the graphic designers--sort of like H.P. Lovecraft on smack. Seriously though, the intense feeling of immersion one gets as they roam through increasingly strange environments, fighting to survive while gaping in awe at your surroundings and marveling at the effect of the positional 3D sound, is unique to the Unreal series. Folks, graphics wise, it doesn’t get any better! The total experience isn’t cheap though, requiring an up-to-date system to really shine through. With my test system, I was playing in 1280x1024 resolution and getting 35 FPS average with every available bell and whistle maxed out--quite serviceable.

Gameplay:

Some background: Prisoner 849 is rescued from the drifting shuttlecraft after recently escaping the hell of the planet surface by the UMS Bodega Bay, an Earth ship whose occupants decide to use your knowledge of the planet to aide them in their mission to recover some important data from the Prometheus which recently crashed on its surface. OOOOOKay fine. Here we go again once more into the breech!

Very similar to the original Unreal as far as gameplay, Mission Pack offers the same high level of exciting shooter action that Unreal fans have come to expect. I had hoped for increased environmental interactivity such as more things to blow up and bash around, but other than the tables, chairs, crates, and barrels, the world is limited to the original engine’s potential. Happily, there are a few surprises however, as several new enemies will be encountered -- each with its own peculiarities (beware the Terran Marine!). Making their debut in the Mission Pack are several new weapons: the Rocket Launcher, the Grenade Launcher, and the Combat Assault Rifle all guarantee the player new modes of destruction.

Unreal Mission Pack: Return to Na Pali’s multiplayer has been refined constantly, with several updates and patches offered since its release. I can say at this point that it is almost “spot on,” so to speak, as far as responsiveness and overall experience. With several types of games offered, including Deathmatch, Co-Operative (my favorite), Team, Gravity, Cloak, and King of the Hill, Unreal is now a contender for the reigning king of multiplayer FPS games. And not to be outdone, Unreal Mission Pack’s Bots in Botmatch are now even more intelligent and difficult to outwit than ever. I couldn’t!

Difficulty:

This is a very easy game as far as control, very intuitive. A seasoned FPS fan will easily recognize the control inputs and quickly warm to the map plots.

Game Mechanics:

Those playing Unreal Mission Pack will be very familiar with the incredible range of options available to custom configure every single facet of the amazing Unreal 3D engine. In fact, most people would probably be annoyed at having so many options -- I’m not one of those. The designers of Unreal were definitely keeping the best interests of “ole d0gs” in mind when they equipped this baby. You may configure to your hearts content and never be stuck for options. Glide is still king when playing Unreal Mission Pack, but D3D is a close second and works good, with Open GL closing in on a good gaming experience.

Unreal Mission Pack: Return to Na Pali is a runaway success. Snag it game fans, and prepare yourself for a wonderful 3D experience!
