Graphics & Sound:

An upbeat soundtrack, cutting edge graphics, and a radical light show best describes what’s in store for the lucky adrenaline seeking game junkie who purchases Redline. The rumble of high performance engines gives one an immediate rush in the first level as you are given a vehicle right away. It is impossible to take it all in at once, you simply will have to get used to concentrating on any immediate threat as there is always some spectacular explosion or crash sequence that will stop you dead in your tracks just to watch it. Be prepared to be killed quite often as you drool over the abundant “eye candy.” Redline has a very customizable video options panel and will surely be the sole purpose for people concluding that their old computer finally has to have an upgrade as the graphics are well above most systems ability to do it justice. The total gaming experience Redline offers is nothing short of awesome!

Gameplay:

Quake meets Interstate 76 -- a.k.a. Redline! My whole review could most efficiently be summed up in those words. Your character is sent on a variety of missions which involve elements of First Person Shooters and Driving-Combat games. You will be treated to cut-scenes which will instruct you on your mission objectives. Missions usually begin with some kind of vehicular combat which, when finished, can be followed up by exiting your vehicle and accomplishing the rest on foot. A fully customizable controller interface will give you options for various combinations of joystick, keyboard, or mouse.

The gameplay in Redline’s First Person Shooter format is quite familiar, and most every gamer will have mastered the skills needed in either Quake or Unreal. The Driving-Combat is a little more difficult in that a successful player will have to master the “Powerslide.” This maneuver is accomplished by building up sufficient speed to skid the vehicle and perform a 360 degree direction reversal so as to quickly orient your offensive weapons at a pursuer.

Difficulty:

Quite a lot of experimentation was necessary on my part with the controller options before I had my controls mapped the way I was most comfortable with. Redline combines close to 100% of the features of both FPS games and Driving-Combat games, with expected confusion. To alleviate this, the game has a very well thought-out interface in which to separately configure controls for both in-vehicle and walking around use. I experienced Moderate difficulty.

Game Mechanics:

Redline is a very addictive and original combination of two separate genres. A heightened sense of control is present here as you now have the element of vehicular travel added to the crowded and somewhat repetitive FPS scene. Having the option to explore this world with motorized vehicles is an element that has been, in my opinion, too often neglected. It really makes this game lots of fun.
