Tunguska

Genre: Action/ Puzzle

Graphics & Sound:

Well, somebody call the fire department -- this game is on fire. Tunguska’s main character is drawn slightly on the cartoony side, but the backgrounds are gorgeous. The skyline effects are equal to if not more breathtaking than that of Unreal, and the realism in the character movement is downright scary. The depth of detail found in this game is shocking. One can actually see the mechanisms that make up the gears that turn the bloodied shredders that attempt to lay you to rest. There is some noticeable break up with on-screen transitions, but nothing that takes too much away from the game.

The sound was slightly lax as far as background effects, but the background score set an incredible atmosphere in the game; downright spooky if you ask me.

Gameplay:

Tomb Raider fans will grab their left foot with their right hand, their right with their left, and levitate off the ground with excitement. Tunguska is very similar feel to the Tomb Raider series, but with the added flare of the martial arts. You can sweep, side kick, roundhouse kick, spinning side kick, jab, uppercut, right cross, hook, parry, dodge... the list goes on and on baby. Not to mention bopping scantily clad ninja women with a flailing nunchaku.

Difficulty:

Hope you have a lot of hard drive space for all the saves you’re gonna need to progress in Tunguska. You can save at any time, but the life sources are scarce and you really have to learn the mechanics of fighting if you wish to survive. The artificial intelligence makes opponents extremely hard to defeat. One cannot use the same attacks in succession or they will be shoving a toothbrush where the sun don’t shine to brush their pearly whites. Not to mention you also need enough brain power to solve the puzzles. On several occasions, a strategy guide would have been quite handy.

Game Mechanics:

Tunguska is a third person action, beat ’em up puzzle game. Just imagine placing Jackie Chan in Lara Croft’s boots and watching the proverbial fur fly. I just can’t imagine why more games like this aren’t made. The programming team was extremely original and brought forth what I think is a great game. I say here “Here! Here!” to you guys at Project Two Interactive for not using someone else’s engine and making a first person clony, and for making an original and thorough third person action game.
