Uprising 2: Lead and Destroy

Score: 80%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: 3DO
Developer: Cyclone Studios
Media: CD/1
Players: 1 - 8
Genre: Strategy/ Shooter/ Online

Graphics & Sound:

While not having spectacularly detailed graphics, Uprising 2 managed to impress me with its ability to maintain a high frame-rate even in very intense battles filled with many moving objects and special effects. This may have been intentional due to the nature of the game as I would consider it unplayable (suicide) with anything other than a sustained, smooth appearance. Graphics customization is adequate and requires a graphics card capable of running Glide in order to obtain the aforementioned performance. Sounds are realistic and include a CD playback utility for game music.

Gameplay:

An avid fan of first person shooters (Unreal, Quake, Half-Life) I, d0gsb0dy, began this assignment with little enthusiasm, thinking the game would be a slow-pulse test of nerves and endurance. Surprisingly, though, after playing several scenarios and a campaign, I can safely say I have a new way to test the limits of my insomnia tendencies. No caffeine needed here as plenty of adrenaline will be on hand courtesy of the blisteringly intense gameplay when in the First Person Combat Mode. You are a gunner/pilot in the Wraith Corps. A Wraith is a fast, maneuverable, heavily armed hover-tank. You are tasked with destroying the offensive capability of several races of aliens that have threatened the New Alliance (Humans).

Step 1: Establishing a base of operations is the first step. Do this by setting up defenses and beginning production of offensive war machines.

Step 2: Now, scout out your enemy with drones. When found, attack him, take his territory and repeat Step One until the game A.I. says you win.

Did I say A.I? You bet I did! The game’s A.I. is my savior as I am not much of a strategist or manager. It helps you by making suggestions at appropriate times which are activated by a “hot key.” Just press the key when suggested and live longer.

Difficulty:

It took me quite a bit of practice and several scenarios before I felt at home using the complicated interface. Fortunately, Uprising 2: Lead and Destroy includes a helpful Training Tutorial to get you started.

Game Mechanics:

I feel I should mention here that I was fortunate enough to have on-hand an excellent controller for this review. The Panther XL from Mad Catz is a track-ball/joystick combo which made my time in the trenches quite productive and rewarding.

Tactics and strategy. In the real world, success depends on mastering both. He who can solve the riddle of combining the two harmoniously will find Uprising 2: Lead and Destroy to be a boot in the rear.
