Graphics & Sound: Cabbage Patch Kids: The Patch Puppy Rescue is a cute, if excessively short, game appropriate only for the youngest of children. The graphics of Patch Puppy Rescue are fairly typical for a Game Boy Advance title. The environments, characters, and bad guys are displayed as three dimensional sprites and are fully animated. Put another way, the game features attractive visuals that will more than satisfy the young age group the game is intended for. Sound and music share similar characteristics, bouncy, light, fun and friendly. The same type of stuff kids get from shows like Sesame Street and Teletubbies.
Gameplay: Cabbage Patch Kids: The Patch Puppy Rescue is an extraordinarily simple and straightforward platformer. Think Super Mario Bros. but with greatly simplified gameplay and a toned down difficulty. The game consists of no more than a handful of short stages, with just as many mini-games thrown in. Players attempt to find the goal of each level while, optionally, collecting blue gems scattered throughout the stage. The game’s story is appropriate fare for young kids. A group of Cabbage Patch Kids bought some puppies for each other, but the puppies get away. You must choose a kid and go collect all the puppies.
Difficulty: As I said before, this game is extremely easy. While the difficulty was gauged for the intended audience of the game, toddlers and young school children, I would argue the low difficulty is still extreme and the game would benefit from an adjustable difficulty rating. Personally, I was able to fully clear the game in less than forty minutes. Adept kids are unlikely to take much longer. So if you’re looking for a game to keep your child occupied for a while, Patch Puppy Rescue may not be suitable.
Game Mechanics: The game attempts to be extremely kid friendly by not allowing players to lose at any point. While this is a good concept in theory, one doesn’t want to unduly frustrate the young player. Because of the extremely short duration of the game, it only serves to trivialize accomplishment even more. Cabbage Patch Kids: The Patch Puppy Rescue attempts to be a fun, easy game for extremely young children, but it tries too hard. I remember being a little kid and playing some truly tough games like Super Mario Bros.. Sure, it was a little too hard for me, but little kids can hold their own more than Patch Puppy Rescue gives them credit for.
