Graphics & Sound:

EA has released the second of its booster packs for Battlefield 2 with Battlefield 2: Armored Fury. Their first booster pack, Euro Forces met with very limited acceptance, and reviews from the media and players were mixed. I am here to report that EA has broken through the melancholy with Armored Fury. It has more of everything you have come to love about tanks, planes, and things that go boom in the night.

There was no change to the looks of the core Battlefield 2 game. All of the player kits and uniforms are the same. New vehicles, of course, mean new skins but nothing that steps outside the bounds of their real world counterparts.

New vehicles also mean new sounds to listen for on the battlefield. Keeping your ears open is key to knowing that you are being snuck up on or artillery is soon to be raining from the sky.

Gameplay:

Armored Fury is exactly what you would expect, more beautiful tanks and the wide open spaces in which to play with them. Their are also new bomber variants of the jets and new helicopters to watch out for, as they like to eat tanks for breakfast. The three new maps are set up perfectly for mechanized combat.

There have been a few minor changes with the 1.3 patch that accompanied the release of the booster pack. One really nice change has been the introduction of co-op play. Now you can play unranked games for practice with and against bots. You can also airdrop vehicles if you get stranded out in the open and have a long way to go. Great for escaping oncoming tanks.

The three new maps are Midnight Sun, Operation Harvest and Operation Road Rage. Each of these maps are huge and have plenty of places to hide out. Midnight sun is a dusk map offering plenty of low light cover to anti-tank personnel moving about. Operation Harvest is a wide open expanse allowing for clear sight over distance, perfect for tank to tank long distance combat. Road rage is a focused head to head map with lots of aircraft to keep your eyes peeled for.

The new bomber variants are the A-10 Warthog for the Americans, the Chinese Fatan Q-5, and the MEC Russian made SU-39. All of these planes are designed for a slow flight at extremely low altitudes, making them easy targets for mobile anti-aircraft and stinger installations. The key is to get in and be on target, drop your bombs and then get out again quick. There is also a new breed of light helicopter with limited armor, but with an embedded radar that points out enemy armor and personnel. Though designed for anti-personnel, these small, fast helicoptors have twin cannons, and the right pilot can make quick work of armored vehicles with them.

Difficulty:

This is not a hop-in and play booster. Armored Fury requires you to have a good mastery of not only armored combat, but of aerial as well. There are not many forgiving areas, and you need to be quick on your feet to find cover and set up defenses against the incoming armor.

Game Mechanics:

Battlefield 2: Armored Fury has a few changes to the strength of their weapons to make note of. In the past, it was extremely difficult to take down aircraft with anti-air missiles. Sometimes it could take an entire salvo of four missiles from mobile anti-air vehicles to score a kill. Now two dead-on missiles is all it takes. Also the payload of the anti-aircraft vehicles is cut in half to accommodate for this change.

Armored Fury scores a direct hit with me. In Euro Forces nothing really changed about the way you play the game. Armored Fury will force you to change your standard ways in many respects. I will continue to see you on the field of battle. I am still waiting for EA to give me the shoulder-mounted stinger I have been wanting for Christmas. But I am extremely happy rolling around in tanks.
