Graphics & Sound:

Ker Plunk!/Toss Across/Tip It 3 Pack takes three games that Mattel has had on the shelves for quite some time and puts them into the GBA in one nice package, good for lengthy car trips with several siblings sharing the back seat.

Graphically, each game does a good job representing its table-top counterpart. In Ker Plunk!, not only do you get a good representation of the cylinder full of marbles, but you can also rotate the camera around the tube to get a look at the sticks and balls in every angle.

The game also sports 10 different avatars for the players to choose. These characters, though not differing in skills, are of many different races and seem to range from 10 year-old girls to 16 year-old boys.

Unfortunatly, there isn't much to this game when it comes to sound. I don't recall anything special about the music, and the sound effects got the job done, but left about as much an impression as the music.

Gameplay:

Ker Plunk!/Toss Across/Tip It 3 Pack does a fairly good job of duplicating the table-top games. Each game starts off with you choosing the number of players, whether each of the players is human or A.I. driven, the difficulty setting of the game and what avatar each player will use. Instead of forcing the players to have multiple GBA's and copies of the game, which doesn't really seem necessary for turn-based games, you just pass the hand-held back and forth as each person's turn arises.

Ker Plunk! consists of a tub with dozens of holes in it. At the beginning of the game, dozens of sticks are put in the holes so that they form a kind of net and the tube is filled with marbles. Each player removes a stick and any marbles that fall appear in his/her bin. The person with the least amount of marbles when the tube is empty wins.

Toss Across has you changing the power and position of your toss. But it isn't quite that simple. Below the power level bar, there is a toss angle indicator that moves back and forth, and in order to get an optimal toss, you have to time your action just right. The goal is to get three X's or O's in a row. One of the things that makes this game different from your typical Tic-Tac-Toe is that you can toss a bean bag into a square that is already set and change it to your symbol. You can also land the bag between two squares and change both of them.

Tip It is probably the more difficult of the three games and challenges the players to collect three discs of the same color. A turn starts with a spin that tells you which colored disc you will try to get. Then you choose the peg of discs that you want to retrieve from. Move your fork to the peg with your color on top and try to remove it carefully. If you get the disc off without touching the peg, then it counts.

Difficulty:

Each game has three difficulty settings that change one aspect of the game to make it easier or harder for the players and A.I. Ker Plunk! starts off with fewer sticks at higher difficulty levels. The harder the setting, the fewer moves the game will last and the more crucial each choice becomes.

The toss-angle meter in Toss Across moves slower for the lower levels, so it requires less accuracy in order to get the optimal throwing angle for your chosen position and power. Tip It's sensitivity when removing the discs is turned up the higher the difficulty setting. This means that there is less margin for error when pulling the disc off of the peg and the slightest error can end your turn in the third difficulty setting.

Game Mechanics:

There aren't a whole lot of unique mechanics in Ker Plunk!/Toss Across/Tip It 3 Pack. The only aspects of this pack that really impressed me was in the game Ker Plunk. I really applaud the developers with their math prowess as far as figuring out how the marbles react to the various sticks. I can see this being a very easy task with a full 3D engine and true vector mathematics at their disposal, but given the GBA's limited capabilities, I can see this being a major hurdle to overcome.

This 3 Pack takes the classic Mattel games into the digital world and does a fair job at making them portable. If the kids are stuck in the back seat on a long car trip, then this game should keep them entertained for a while.
