X3 Reunion: Version 2.0

Score: 85%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: Enlight Software
Developer: Egosoft
Media: DVD/1
Players: 1
Genre: Simulation/ Shooter

Graphics & Sound:

First off how did I miss X3 Reunion the first time? I blame HALO and BattleField 2. We now have the re-release with X3 Reunion: Version 2.0 which includes most of the pertinent patches as well as the inclusion of the BALA GI'S RESEARCH missions included in the game. If you already own this game, do not fret that you need to acquire a new copy. All of the new material can be found online at the main web site here.

The game may have a year on it now, but with video card jumps that have been made recently, you can pump the graphics up fairly high and find a great visual experience. Usually, I hate to compare great games, but I definitely got an EVE feeling from all of the particles and scale. OK, maybe not to the same scale, but you definitely get that, "Hey it's space, space is big!" feeling from the visuals.

They use early lip synching technologies with their animated voiceovers and that shouldn't distract you from a decent dialogue. I tried to ignore the slow moving mouth as heated dialogue came from their lips. The music is sweeping and ominous, perfect for your surroundings. Who is to say what realistic blaster fire should sound like? Does it take you out of the fight or immersion? I go with how does it make my speakers jump when I have them turned up during battle? X3 passes my test with flying colors.

Gameplay:

OK, sport's fans, it is time to break out those reading glasses. If you are not familiar with the flight controls for X3 Reunion: Version 2.0, then you are going to find yourself inside the manual. I think that this is one of the coolest things about playing sim games. I like pick up and go games as well, but every now and then, I like to feel that I have earned the right to pilot a huge spacecraft by learning its controls. 4 pages of the almost 100 page manual are dedicated to just the key commands on the keyboard.

So now you find yourself in a strange galaxy at the helm of a fighter in the middle of a war you know nothing about. Back to the manual with you. There is a lot of history to take in. You can also find summaries of the previous games at the main website or MANY other fan sites on the web. I suggest picking up X2 to play through the story anyway. You will not regret it.

Now, the universe lays before you. In the very first menu, you have the opportunity to follow along the main mission on Normal (average), Quick Start (easy), and X-treme (you guessed it, HARD!). You can also take out as one of three free roaming spirits as Aspiring Explorer, Humble Merchant, or Bankrupt Assassin. But it doesn't stop here. You can create your own custom game and your own galaxy with the Galaxy Editor. With each of the three other scenarios, you search the galaxy, start up your own diverse financial business or scour the universe picking off scum for the highest bidder. All three rock.

So for those of you who are wanting to step back into the game and check out the Bala Gi research missions, you are in store for some cool new toys. New spacecraft, weapons, constructs and new missions. The easiest way to explain it is to take an already good game, fix some issues and sprinkle on more of everything good, and then spend weeks digesting the goodness as you explore a new way to play the game.

Folks, by now if I haven't told you enough to get back into this game, or to go ahead and pick it up at its current low price, then let me sum it up as, this game is huge with not just hours of replay, but hundreds and hundreds of hours of replay. This game is one of the deepest games I can recall to date. You have read many reviews from me here where games have a lot to them. Usually that is surface depth and the mysticism is lost quickly once you get to playing. Not here.

Difficulty:

Ha! Ha! Ha! Difficulty. X3 Reunion: Version 2.0 has something for everyone. The easiest mode is easy enough for a beginner to get their feet underneath them and try out the control system without paying the penalty early. Enjoy a sweeping story that takes several games to tell. The difficulty setting not only decides how difficult the combat is going to be but how everything in the universe is going to be toward you.

Aspiring Explorer is easy to get through and more for just the wanderlust of scouring the universe.

Humble Merchant has the universe open for you to buy, bargain and deal your way up. You are not going to have the easy walkaround ability of the explorer. Here you make enemies.

Bankrupt Assassin is all about kill or be killed. The fights are hard, fast, bloody and brutal. You better have your ship together before venturing out here.

Game Mechanics:

Where to begin in X3 Reunion: Version 2.0? You have a rich economic system that is there for you to take every advantage of. Trade in more than 100 different items and pieces of merchandise. You can and will in one setting spend the entire game buying low and selling high to gain and prosper. Use your skill as a pilot and the many ships at your disposal to fly in a true 3D environment. Take on your enemies from above and below to gain a tactical advantage on them. The flight mechanics have all of the little details I like to see like maneuvering thrusters seen on Battlestar Galactica and main drives. Things I expect to see for actual space flight. I was a big Wing Commander fan for the space battles. The difference here is you have your entire screen free to see them coming instead of the obstructed view from the control panel. Outfit your ship with tons of weaponry to fit your style of fighting.

Wow and wow. I am going to to have to give up working so that I can create the universe I want to create using their editor. If you don't ever read a review from me again you will know where I will be. Pick this game up. Play it. Love it. Give up sleep, you can sleep when you're dead. I am already drooling for a continuation. Yes this is an older game, and it just goes to show that some can withstand time to rise again. I will see you later, better check your six, or you won't see me.
