Touch Mini Boombox Speaker
Score: 85%
Developer: thumbsUp!
Device Type: Audio

Function:

Touch Mini Boombox Speaker is a single speaker designed to really amp-up the sounds of your smartphone, but with a twist that makes it both simple and easy to use.

Where most stand-alone speakers require the listener to hook up an audio cable or set up Bluetooth pairing, the Touch Mini, has a hidden mike that, when lined up with your smartphone, picks up and amplifies the sounds it hears to an impressive degree.

The mic is located in a groove along one side of the octagonal device. That groove is where you place your music player such that the speakers are covered by the groove. This slight cradling also allows for the Touch Mini Boombox to act as a stand for your phone. If placed so the groove is on top of the speaker, then the phone's orientation can be vertical, but it can also be rotated so that the phone is laying on a table horizontally, but be aware that there is nothing actually snapping your device into the speaker. It is just resting there, so you will want to make sure that the setup is as stable as possible.

Given that the cradle that has the mic in it is a specific size, not all devices will fit into the speaker's slot. For that matter, phones with anything other than a slim case will also not fit in the groove. To overcome this issue, the speaker does have a standard 3.5 mm audio in jack, which means that anything with a headphone jack can use this speaker, even if it is fatter than the design allows. Of course, this means it gets away from the "No Cables" feature that the box touts, but it isn't that much of an issue.

Performance:

As for the Touch Mini Boombox Speaker's sound, the 3 Watt speaker sounds clear and crisp. There were times when I heard some static, but that was rare, and only when using the built-in microphone and not the audio cable. We were rather impressed by the device's ability to amplify the sound so much. While the power isn't anything that will blow out windows, it could be loud enough to bother the neighbors in the next apartment.

The speaker's battery is recharged via a micro USB port on the back. In our testing, we found that the speakers seem to last a solid four hours before finally giving up the ghost. As for charging time, we saw everything from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the source of the power. As most users might expect, the recharge time was longer when hooked into a computer as opposed to using an AC-to-USB adapter like the one that probably came with your smartphone.

Drawbacks & Problems::

The Touch Mini Boombox Speaker doesn't have that many issues. For what it is, it does well. The only real complaints I have about it is that the speaker claims to also be a phone stand, and while yes, the cradle does act like a stand, it isn't very steady. Given that there is nothing that actually holds your phone to the speaker, it is very easy for a slight bump of a table or a heavy-footed person walking next to the device to cause the phone to spill out of the speaker. This is less of an issue if you have the speaker rotated so that the phone is horizontal instead of standing on top, but it is still a loose enough fit to make you walk softly.

The only other criticism that I can think of is a consequence of the Mini Boombox Speaker not supporting Bluetooth. There are no controls for the volume, no pause/play and no next and previous buttons. All music and audio controls are done through the phone itself, and it can be a little cumbersome to get to the on-screen controls while the device is on the speaker. That being said, this isn't really all that big of an issue. The ease-of-use that comes from simply sliding a music player into the groove and getting a much bigger sound far outweighs this particular shortcoming.

I found the Touch Mini Boombox Speaker to be much louder than other portable speakers that I've hooked up to my iPhone. As a result, while I can't see using the Touch Mini Boombox Speaker in all situations (for instance, it isn't waterproof), it has quickly become my default portable speaker for while working around the house.
