Graphics & Sound:

I've played a lot of "pet maintenance" games over the years, but I can't say that I have ever played one quite like Pet Zombies. When you first hear the name, you think maybe that it's just that you have a zombie version of a dog or cat, but that is not the case. Your pet in this situation is a zombie: a creature that was once human and is now the living dead.

There are several choices for what you want your zombie to look like. Their appearance is based on what they did before they died. You don't get to choose male or female of each profession though, so if you want a specific male or female, then you'll just have to pick that type. There are also several different playgrounds which change your backgrounds, just so that your zombies don't get bored being in the same place every time. You'll have to unlock them first, though.

Each new playground also brings its own background noises that fit the area. I have to wonder how the cows that you hear in the background of the farm have survived the zombie apocalypse, but I guess it wasn't too bad if the zombies are pets now. The zombies attempt to talk, but it is more grunts than anything intelligible. They will scream quite loud when you burn them! They will also burp when you feed them.

Gameplay:

When you first launch Pet Zombies, you will need to create your first zombie. You can choose from a jock, scientist, clown, prom queen, cook, waitress, nerd, or a granny. After that, you will be given 4 choices of zombie damage and 4 clothing options so that you can create the most fashion-conscious zombie around. Don't worry about being stuck with your choices. If you decide you don't like the zombie that you have, you can change which one it is at any time and still keep the level that they are in the lab. It's quite handy, but a bit unrealistic. Of course, no one is going for realism in this game. After creating your zombie, you will automatically start off in the Care area of the game on the first playroom. Here you will take care of your zombie, feed it, and play with it. The more you do with your zombie, the quicker they level up. Leveling up unlocks different foods, new toys, playrooms, and new zombies and cages. You can create a second zombie as soon as you unlock a new cage. Of course, everything that you unlock to buy will still need to be purchased with Zombucks.

To earn Zombucks, you'll need to play the mini-games in the Play area. At first, there is only one mini-game to play, Zombie Launch. In it, you will use a giant slingshot to launch your zombie as far into the sky as you can. If you get it high enough, you can even turn it into a comet. You unlock the second mini-game when you get your zombie to level 9. Once you unlock the rest of the mini-games, you'll have Backyard Bullseye where you can throw trash at a bullseye that your zombie moves around. You can also just hit your zombie with the trash if you want. Then there's Stomach Pumpin' which is a lot like the game Operation where you have to remove objects from your zombie's stomach without touching the lining. You want to remove as much as you can before the stomach acid hits the top. Next is Dumpster Dive where your zombie will throw stuff out of the dumpster and you want to catch the money and brains, but avoid the trash. Finally there is Luck of the Dead, which is a slot machine. Strange combinations, like 2 arms and a tombstone are winners on these reels. It took me 5 hours and 39 minutes of playing to finally get all the mini-games unlocked, and that was after I figured out that you can quickly level your zombie with the voodoo doll. Back in the Lab, you can customize your zombie and completely change out zombies if you want. You also create new zombies here. Finally, there is the Shop where you can buy food, toys, tools, and more.

Difficulty:

I have yet to find anything that resembles anything difficult in Pet Zombies. You're supposed to feed and care for them, but you really don't have to feed the zombie if you don't want to waste the money on food. They're already dead, so it's not like you can kill them! I just leave them playing with the blow-up dummy for hours and don't bother to look at them for an hour or more. They eventually level themselves up and never really get bored of the same toy. You just have to leave them playing with a toy that they won't eat. You can earn badges and trophies as you go for doing certain things, but they're not hard to do. You can activate Street Pass to share your trophies with others.

The mini-games are the one place that you can challenge yourself, not because they are difficult, but because you can always try and get better than your high score. Personally, I find the Zombie Launch to be the most fun, once I figured out how to use float to the optimal potential. I also played Dumpster Dive a lot because it was a quick and easy way to get a lot of Zombucks.

Game Mechanics:

The controls in Pet Zombies are easy to use. Basically everything that you need to do is done from the touch screen. You don't need the button controls for anything at all. The only place that I found the controls to be touchy was the Stomach Pumpin' mini-game, but that is by design. You have to be very careful not to touch the sides of the intestines and it is barely big enough for the objects to come out in some places. You need to have a very steady hand.

The concept of Pet Zombies reminds me of a movie called Fido except without the moral implications of keeping once living humans as pets. If you enjoy the twisted concept of it all though, feel free to try out Pet Zombies. It's not as if you can fail, but it's not entertaining for very long either. There's just only so long that you can keep lighting your zombie on fire or shocking it until you get bored.
