Graphics & Sound:

There are so many games that you can play online and even more that you can play on your phone. I haven't run across many though that will let you play the same game with the same characters and equipment, going back and forth between your phone and PC. Dark Legends lets you do just that. You can play on your PC using the Chrome browser and when you're not at a PC, you can play it on a Droid phone without missing a thing!

Dark Legends is a horror themed game where you are a vampire. They have done a wonderful job of giving you clothing options so that you can feel like your vampire is living in pretty much any vampire movie/era that you desire. There are things like Classic, which looks like Elvira on a woman and the classic Dracula on a man, Japanese which is a kimono, Victorian, School Uniform, and Aggressor which is demonic looking and my personal favorite. Those are all platinum purchases, which you will have to spend real world money for, however. There are quite a lot that you can buy with the gold that you get for playing like Colonial, Biker, Club, and Assassin, so you don't have to purchase Platinum if you don't want to. The Platinum clothing isn't very expensive though, so if you want a fun wardrobe a lot quicker, I think it is worth buying. You can also change your vampire's hair and face. Some of them look more evil and some don't. Granted, there aren't many different options yet and the face is one package. You can't choose eyes, nose, mouth, etc. separately, but I imagine they will add more as the game is continually expanding.

The background music is eerie and haunting. The characters don't speak out loud; rather, all of the dialogue is by text. The intro is narrated, though and I really like the voice. There are other sound effects and such as your go through the fighting levels. You will hear gun shots when you are being shot at (which does hurt a vampire some), ghost cackles when you uncover one, and grunts from your fighting character at times. All of this combined leaves you with a very robust sounding game.

Gameplay:

In Dark Legends, you are on a quest for vengeance. Your character was turned into a vampire, a member of the undead, against their wishes, so now you are determined to find out who did it and why. To do so, you are going to have to go on a series of campaigns with several missions (10-20) each. Each mission will take a certain amount of energy and some take a certain amount of time to complete. You might think waiting to have energy is a pain, but actually, waiting on actions to complete just gives you time to play the fighting levels. You can tell the difference because in the map, the fighting levels have swords behind the skull to indicate the type of level. Granted, I have run into at least two levels that took 24 hours to complete, but that gave me lots of time to go replay previous levels and level up my vampire. Every third or fourth (or so) mission is a fighting level. These levels can be played solo or multiplayer. You will have to battle your way through undead zombies, ghosts, military officers, gang members, and pretty much any other kind of danger you can think of. Of course, you are a vampire with a lot of strength and possibly some really awesome weapons. While you are going through the battle zones, you can rob money and items from corpses and from items that you can destroy, so attack everything that you can see just to see what you get. Some items that you pick up are just normal, but some are rare or even legendary. The rare and legendary items will give you better stats. Your character can equip a weapon and four gems (Blood Gem, Shadow Gem, Moon Gem, and Beast Gem). The weapons and gems all will increase certain stats like Attack, Defense, Health, Damage, and DPS. Weapons and Gems will have a minimum level required to use them, so sometimes you will find something that you can't use quite yet. However, the clothing doesn't change stats; it is purely for cosmetic value. After you complete the first set of missions, which should take about 10 minutes, you'll get to customize your vampire's face and hair as well.

Besides the storyline, there are plenty of other things that you can do in the Vampire District. If you're looking for more fighting, there are two different PVP areas, CTF (Capture the Flag) in the Asylum and DM (Death Match) in the Psycho Ward. The game restricts it so that you will only be battling players within 6 levels of you to keep things relatively fair. You can create and join guilds as well. These are helpful to get to know more players so that you will have teammates for PVP and won't have to hope you're teamed up with good players. You can also have friends join you in the solo missions, so it is good to make friends. Vampire District lets you shop as well. Ester's Estates lets you buy a guild hall (and create a guild). Sanctuary is like a night club, where you can buy blood packs. You can also buy and sell weapons and gems. Sergio's Clothing is pretty obviously where you go to buy new clothes. Some of the hats will automatically change your hairstyle. You can change your appearance at the Restless Slumber Mortuary, which makes a weird sense. There's only one hair color, with not many options, but for a free game, it's a lot. You can also buy new styles at the Mortuary when you have collected some coins.

Difficulty:

Since you can play both missions and PVP, Dark Legends is as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. Each mission will give you a certain amount of EXP and gold, so you can keep replaying the easier ones to level up as much as you want. Yes, that does take energy, but energy is replaced over time or you can buy energy packs if you don't like waiting. Granted, the non-battle mission will not give you items. You will still need to play the fighting missions for that and rob as many corpses and stuff as you can. Your vampire can get hurt, but during the missions, you can use blood packs to replenish your health. You can buy blood packs for platinum or with gold that you have found on the missions, so as long as you keep enough spare blood on hand, you can get damaged as much as you want.

The PVP battles are a bit more difficult than the missions as you can bet that you're probably going to be playing against at least a few people that are higher levels than you. To keep people from buying their victories, you cannot use blood packs during them either, so that makes things a lot more difficult! There are health bonuses lying around that you can pick up, but not many, so I would conserve them as much as you can.

Game Mechanics:

Dark Legends is an easy game to get the hang of both on the PC and on the phone. On your PC, you can click to move or use the A, S, W, D keys. Personally, I think the keys are easier so that you can keep your mouse on the attack button and click it easier. You will also need to click on your special powers buttons. These powers will level up as you level up, so get to know them well. You will also gain new powers as you go. By default, a new character's powers will auto-level when your character levels. You can turn this off, but if you do, you will not be able to turn it back on again. Personally, I prefer to choose my levels. On the phone, there is a virtual stick on the bottom left corner that you can use to move around. It took me a bit of time to get used to just holding and moving in the right direction, but you'll get it soon enough. The graphics and everything look exactly the same on the Droid version and the PC one, so there is no trouble going back and forth between them.

The game has daily deals where they will feature one platinum item at a discount, some of which are just helpful, like better weapons, but some, like blood packs, you will almost certainly need! You can also buy energy refills for when you are impatient (like me). If you died, you can buy a respawn with full health for quite cheap. You can sell your old weapons and gems for gold. I like that if you accidentally sell an item, you can buy it back. You can only buy back the last 5 items you have sold though, so make sure to get it back before you sell more. You can hold 100 items in inventory, so you don't have to sell often. You can also have multiple characters, if you buy another slot for platinum.

As I said before, there are a lot of browser-based games that you can choose to play, so many that it can be hard to choose which ones you want to spend time on. I like that Dark Legends can be played as much or as little as you want. From your phone, it is nice to be able to just launch the missions that are time-based from anywhere and collect them from anywhere. Then when you get home, you can pick up where you left off. Because it runs on Chrome, you can play from Windows, Mac, or Linux. As of right now, it is just Droid and IOS, but that covers a huge market of mobile phones. I recommend that you check out this robust and yet free to play game today.
