Graphics & Sound:

If you like the look of classic side-scrolling Arcade shooters, you are bound to enjoy the Game Boy Advance partner to the Gamecube release under the same license. Yes, this is Robotech the Macross Saga, a very different animal from its big Gamecube brother, but no less enjoyable. Macross Saga includes playable characters like Roy Fokker and 4 others you'll recognize. Perform well, and you'll open up other hidden characters. The graphics in the game are completely what you might expect to find in old shooters like '1942,' right down to the way the enemy fire looks on screen, the backgrounds and the slow-down. Everything about Macross Saga feels retro, and if you are a fan of the old classics you'll enjoy the new face put on a tried and true formula. The music and sound effects match the visual mayhem nicely, without going overboard. What will really impress you is the multiplayer action, available for 2 players in Co-Op play or Vs. Mode for up to 4 players! Co-Op brings back memories of shelling out way too many quarters with a friend back in the day when I was actually allowed in an arcade.

Gameplay:

When I talk about side-scrolling Arcade shooter, I'm not just talking about a good looking facsimile. I'm talking the real thing here. Or at least as good as you're gonna get in the modern day. It's nice in a way to see the simplicity of this game, and also great to find it so playable in the midst of more complex and 'deep' games. Basically, this game is only as deep as your thumb can move, and that is just what makes it so compelling.

As the Zentraedi encroach on Earth, scientists have perfected a special weapon that should send them packing, but all the weapons in the Universe won't be enough if the Zentraedi get too far. You, as the pilot of a new offensive weapon, the Veritech, will go up against the legions of the Zentraedi to hold them back until Earth's final weapon can be unleashed. Level after level, wave after wave of enemies, and if you hold out long enough you'll be crowned a hero. Along the way you can enlist the help of a friend in Co-Op Mode. You can also upgrade your Veritech to improve performance in areas like shield and weapon technology. Once you've unlocked all the extra characters and upgraded your Veritech of choice, challenge up to 4 other gamers to Vs. matches.

You might expect transformation to be a part of Macross Saga, and you'd be correct. Simply by pressing the shoulder buttons, you can transform from Fighter to Guardian or Battloid form. The added dimension here is way more than we ever got back in the arcade, letting you know it really IS 2002. In Guardian form, you can sustain more damage, and there will be times when using Fighter or Battloid are to your advantage. Learning to transform isn't critical to success in the game, but it sure makes things more fun! Plus, some areas are just a bear to complete without a transformation. Along with the standard side-scrolling levels, you'll have a couple levels where you launch a Destroid and take on the Zentraedi ground forces. These levels mostly provide some variety, but aren't quite as thrilling as the others.

Difficulty:

Into every life, some rain must fall. Or so they say. Not that it's really fair to knock Macross Saga for being too hard, but it is a seriously difficult game. People who aren't dedicated arcade shooter fans or haven't been in the past won't 'get it,' I suspect. They'll get wiped from the sky a few times and give up. It's too bad, because just like shooters of old, if you hang in there and learn the patterns, upgrade your Veritech and just keep plugging, you'll win in the end. But, don't be surprised if you find yourself frustrated and cursing over an ill-timed death at the end of a level. But, I guess that's what separates the hardcore gamers from the curious fans out there.

Game Mechanics:

The transformations are probably the most different thing about how the game runs, compared to any similar retro arcade game you've played. The ability to save and upgrade characters is also a nice distinction from an actual arcade experience. Depending on the form you've chosen, weapons operate differently. Secondary weapons are available always, but in Fighter form show up as missles instead of an amped-up gun. Power-ups for health and weapons systems are available, but not too often, within each level. The weapons power-ups are fun, if a bit predictable. All in keeping with the retro feel. Things like homing missles are fun, and those rare times when you can call in back-up wingmen and have two ships flanking you really help take the heat off. If you can't get a lot of the power-ups, you can at least upgrade your Veritech at the end of the level, according to points you rack up by destroying enemies. It's a nice system, and since each of the characters start off with different strengths and weakness you can really craft a Veritech that will match how you like to play.

Macross Saga is one of the better Arcade shooters to come along for GBA since the system launched. Not that it is easily accessible to all, because it will definitely weed out the casual gamers right away. And I mean right away. Like in the first level. Not that we want to knock this, because being a hard game and demanding some phat skills is what makes the reward at the end of the 10th level that much sweeter! If you love Robotech, you should definitely give this a try, and even if you couldn't care one bit about the franchise but like the style of game, you'll be cheating yourself out of some awesome retro arcade mojo if you pass on Macross Saga. Do your part for Earth's defense and get this game!
