Graphics & Sound:

NFL Blitz 20-03 is about as close as we're going to get to a sequel of Mutant League Football. Though the graphics don't treat you with the same amount of blood and gore, they are good enough to compete with most of the major sim titles out there on the market. Player movements are lifelike and fluid, and the closer you get the more you'll be impressed. They are able to keep this consistency during the outrageous tackles, letting the action flow realistically, no matter how crazy the hits are.

Accompanying the tackles are the cracks and crunches of human on plastic. These audio effects are powerful, and do the visuals justice, which keeps your head in the game where it belongs. Voices also come along with the package in the form of witty commentary and players' screams and curses. Never seeming to become redundant, you'll quickly see where this game would have ended up without these sonic goodies.

Gameplay:

And though the sound effects are great, the game would have been much worse if it weren't for the more than adequate gameplay it provides. Blitz has been taking the sport of football on a tangent for years now, and though this rendition is a little different in style from its early predecessors, it does no less than deliver an extreme arcade experience.

The overall speed of the game is increased through fewer players on the field, less plays in the book (though there is still a heap to choose from), and the impression that everybody is on an all time adrenaline rush. While it is basically still the same game of football, with the same scoring methods and most of the same rules, the overall feel inevitably comes out being something different.

Besides the heavy hitting, it is mainly the little things that set Blitz apart from other football games out there. The 'impact player', for one, is a nice little feature. Before every play, one of your players will be designated the 'impact player'. While picking your play, you also choose how this player will act, whether you want him to blitz, get open, cover, or any of a few other specified tasks.

What Blitz is blatantly lacking is the ability to create your own team. But on the other hand, you can now create your own player. This option allows you to put together someone from a regular looking guy to a pirate, robot, ninja, or a number of other deranged body styles. But though you can alter their skills and looks, their uses in the game modes are limited to Exhibition games only. It would have been nice if you could have done a little more with this feature.

Though Blitz is definitely no substitute for the real thing, it is inching its way in that direction, all the while keeping its eccentric and unique playing style. Every team and player from the NFL is included, and player stat tracking is an option, letting you rub in your victories even deeper. This is fantasy football at its best.

Difficulty:

Though it's a great Multiplayer game, the single player element is hindered by an almost cheating AI system. Trying to get your passing game going will put your victory on the line every time you hit the button. The computer will snatch the ball out of the air relentlessly, no matter what skill level their team is at. This frustrating situation hurt the gameplay severely, as it all but physically forces you to avoid passing.

Game Mechanics:

If you're a stranger to football, getting used to the feel of Blitz might take a little time. For no matter how different you make a game from the original, it will still retain basic elements that must be understood before you can actually start to get good at it. But it is true that Blitz is a lot easier to get a handle on than games like Madden.

If icon passing, receivers in motion, or on-side kicks make you squeamish, then even this game might not be able to help you out. But if you have even a fleeting interest in the sport of football, or you just like to pound people, Blitz can offer you a good time. Regardless of its rather thin one-player experience, getting a few people around the machine with this game in the tray should result in a blast.
